batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Steve Cohen delivers! Whoopee! Now go and sign the Polar Bear. Will Brett Baty give up his #22 that Soto's worn throughout his career? TBDJuan Soto, the prodigiously talented and charmingly theatrical slugger, has now become the highest-paid player in the history of baseball, having agreed to a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal confirmed. The deal, first reported by the New York Post, includes a $75 million signing bonus.https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5932790/2024/12/08/juan-soto-mets-free-agent-deal/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5932790/2024/12/08/juan-soto-mets-free-agent-deal/

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 We had my wife's Yankee fan cousin over for dinner on Easter and we put the Yankee game on. The game was decided when Soto had a phenomenal bat against Josh Hader that resulted in a run-scoring single. I decided then he was the real deal and the Mets had to make a run for him. As for whether this will be too much for him in the long run -- I'll get back to you when I'm 70.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Who pays for the plastic bubble to keep him in?What next?Later
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Soto will be fineWhat happens to Pete is anyone's guessI don't believe Baty will be around to give up the 22
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Me neither. So are we looking at an outfield of Nimmo and Taylor and Soto? Does Marte become a DH or does he get traded?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I'm ok with Marte at DH. Better than at RF rightPersonally I believe there will be another big signing of an SP for the MetsiesDodgers signed Conforto
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Marte is the most expendable of expendables right now. It's Monopoly money with Uncle Steve. Boy, it's nice to have a really, really rich owner.Still need a rotation and a bullpen though, because Soto can't do it all by himself.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Benjamin Grimm wrote:So are we looking at an outfield of Nimmo and Taylor and Soto? He's a bench player and probably plays DH some.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Author Posted December 9, 2024 Plus Soto appears to enjoy Marte's company...though he can always buy new friends.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 A home run every three games.... ... Soto's bat works everywhere, especially in Queens. In 35 career games at Citi Field (146 plate appearances), Soto has a 1.175 OPS with 12 home runs, including two of the five longest home runs in the stadium's history (466 feet, 463 feet). And power isn't even his calling card. Soto's .421 on-base percentage over his seven-year career leads all active players.“He's as good a hitter and as good at knowing what to do with certain pitches,” a longtime National League scout said, “as I've seen since Barry Bonds.”https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5969413/2024/12/08/juan-soto-mets-contract-steve-cohen/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5969413/2024/12/08/juan-soto-mets-contract-steve-cohen/
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Umm, several MFY friends are like yeah didn't want him for that money anyway .... Yeah, ok and no he didn't go to the Mets for the $5 M more , stop it
