What are the odds this is a Chevy thing ? Like did Soto actually slap down his card and pay for it ? Does Baty pay taxes ,or is this a gift ? How do these things work ?

A way around that for the average person is to buy the car and then sell it to the second person for a nominal price (e.g.- $1). I did this in Connecticut when I "sold" my car to my grandson. He had no problems registering the car.

There has to be a bill of sale (it can be hand written) and it has to show the buyer paid sales tax (whichever state in which the sale was conducted). The bill of sale has to be shown when the car is registered. I'm sure the ballplayer/seller's attorney will know if there are any other details.

Yeah, the article I read was one in response to Xmas car commercials, 96% of which seem to involve someone being surprised by a brand new car in the driveway on Christmas morning.

I'm sure that Soto got to do the fun part of that deal -- going out, picking out, maybe even test driving the car he gifted to Baty. Maybe Soto even decided to pick himself up a spare Maserati or Lamborghini for a rainy day or for when his main ride breaks down while he was out there car-shopping.
