  1. Just realized the On The Road travelogue forum was gone when I posted last night about potentially snapping pics of how the Vegas A’s park construction is coming along! I’ll give someone a heads up to move the thread when its re-integrated. BTW, according to the livestream cam, right now they are just starting assembling the roof.
  2. Spending July 4-7th in Vegas, at a resort near the stadium. So I should get some nifty pics of the construction https://ballparkexperience.athletics.com/
  3. The book does position him as an ultimate Texan icon. So it was ambivalent in terms of his time in both NYC and Anaheim
  4. This book doesn’t get that heady in terms of “roads not taken”, with the exception of Ranger officials/journos in 2024 discussing how influential the 1989 signing of Ryan was to the stability of the franchise heading into the 1990s. Ie maybe no Ballpark in Arlington for one, therefore a relocation was a possibility
  5. Due to Ventura being tabbed White Sox skipper at the time Ryan became an exec, does give the author the chance to slip in the story of their 1993 confrontation though
  6. Yeah, no luck in continuing the chronological timeline, next chapter picks up with him becoming a Ranger executive in the early 2010s
  7. Listening to the audiobook version of the new Nolan Ryan bio by Tim Brown. Does a decent enough chronological overview bio for the first part, through Anaheim years. Then veers into several chapters that are more “aspects of his career, an affect on friends & family” sort of things. Looks like it picks up chronological overview bio with his first year in Texas. Not a ton in the Met section. Red Murff got his own chapter, with an interview with Murff’s nephew and MFY Ron Davis, as well as Mike Stanton, who Murff scouted with the Braves. Obviously superficial, so not much beyond what has already been said about his Met years and his contribution to the ‘69 postseason. Good for the crowd that likes breezier, and not as dense year by year/era by era of the person’s life and times, books I suppose.
  8. Since his name was invoked by Howie due to comparisons of assigning numbers, as opposed to requests (ie Rickey Henderson), this is honestly way different though than Kelvin Torve He was 30 when the Mets added him to the big league roster Was playing in the pros since 1981, 2nd round pick by SF, so the epitome of a AAAA player by the time he debuted as a Twin in 1988. Only involved in one being moved from one organization to another transaction as well, being sent from the Giants to the Orioles in 1985 for another lifetime minor leaguer. Ended up logging 42 games of MLB between 1988, 1990 and 1991, and finished his pro days in Japan in 1993 I think the point is the Torve assignment was a legit accident. Giving a rising prospect a single digit for his debut, even if unintentionally neglecting its “intentionally out of circulation” status, is more of an intentional numerical assignment.
  9. Or some sort of special event, like the 60th Anniversary Alumni game day to announce Willie’s
  10. Reddit, TikTok, Bluesky and Facebook are also up there. Though Reddit being a “go to” when it comes to first page hits on Google searches these days probably gives it the edge for social media platform that makes internet strangers’ posts into “expert opinions” for lazy confirmation bias searchers. Though TwiX is still a go to for lazy article writers looking for “average citizen” quotes on any topic, and any point the author wants to make. Ie Howie and “see, the fans want #8 at least kept in unofficial retirement out of respect for Gary Carter!” BTW, did any actually reach out to Mays, or an associate when the Torve “fiasco” happened? All I know is the pre-information age shit storm via sports radio and “journalists” Heh, an even smaller sample to cherry pick confirmation bias agreeing “others like me are saying” “data” from! ;)
  11. Goes from a nice single digit, to a Spring Training/Coaching Staff/September Call Up/MFY one!
  12. BatMags is celebrating the long weekend early! ;)

  18. He pitched only twice against the Mets during Piazza’s years. 6/5/1998 https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS199806050.shtml Looks like Pedro plunked Mikey in his first at bat, Castillo replaced him, and hit a homer! 7/13/2000 https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS200007130.shtml Piazza goes 1-4
  19. Standard shorts fest https://shortsandstoutfilmfestival.weebly.com
  20. Anyone in the Long Beach, NY area, I’m running a film fest, and catching glimpses of the Met game…when its on, at Bright Eye Beer on 50 W Park
  21. Apparently this is open, so they can keep the old McFadden’s space closed to the public again. Smaller area, and a brewery taproom with a kitchen, so I guess a cheaper space to operate.
  22. After pursing the Petco one, I saw an alarming lack of the spots around the neighborhood I hit up both last summer, and over a decade and a half ago (Mets and Comic Con) 🤷🏻‍♂️ Jimmy Buffett Land, while a blast, wouldn’t necessarily make the cut though ;)
  23. I was there last year! Could add a couple of great craft brewery hot spots walking distance from Petco. Also, if one wants to splurge at a tourist trap hotel, then you need to be…ehem…wastin’ away again in Margaritaville…;)
