Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 https://sny.tv/articles/mets-considering-third-base-options-josh-donaldson-july-2021Sources: Mets considering third base upgrades, including Josh DonaldsonThis seems unlikely, but I remember saying the same thing about http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/27500/f1_t27564.shtmlRobinson Cano.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 I think third is where the Mets should be looking certainly.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Author Posted July 3, 2021 I agree. Third base and starting pitching.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Is he an assh*le or do I have that perception because he was on ATL? He recently called out Lucas Giolito for using sticky stuff on the mound.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 With that contract they better be taking back Robinson Cano.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Another prime July trade candidate who plays the hot corner is Kris Bryant, and he has no two additional years to carry.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 We've needed Donaldson for several years it seems but we always wound up with Todd Frazier instead
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Donaldson is the Andrew McCutchen of the infield. When the Mets have needed help in the outfield the past few years, Andrew's name has popped up. Infield help needed? Donaldson's reportedly been in their sights.I'd like to get him.Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Well, they need to do something to snap them out of this offensive funk. If that's Donaldson for a few months, I'll just hope he can keep his assholeism to himself for a bit.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Donaldson is occasionally loud and brash and not shy about expressing opinions. Don't think that alone makes him an asshole although it probably doesn't exclude it either.

Donaldson's reportedly been in their sights.I'd like to get him.Donaldson was in the Mets sights? Or maybe this forum's sights? Like the Wilpons were ever gonna pay what it would've taken to sign Donaldson as a FA.I'll tell you what the Wilpons would have done if they sensed that Mets fans wanted Donaldson: after he signed elsewhere , they'dve said that he could've been had and that all that Sandy or BVW had to do was ask for permission to go and sign him for whatever money was needed and that money was no object.No. He was in reporter (newspaper and internet) rumor-mill sights. Of course, the writers didn't have to pay him. But , logically, he was a good fit for the team.LaterOh. Because you wrote that "Donaldson's reportedly been in their sights". And that "When the Mets have needed help....". So when you wrote "reportedly", you were saying that reporters were reporting that reporters wanted the Mets to sign Donaldson? Why would that even be noteworthy? Reporters'll make a case for every available body.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 The Wilpons could have gotten him for a year when the Braves did, but even that was too much to ask for. His glove is not better than average at this point and his OPS is more low-.800s than low-.900s like in his prime, but that still makes him a valuable player. It's fair to ask if he's valuable enough to take on two more years with a salary above $20M, but I think you have to at least kick the tires.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 His performance since his 2015-16 peek can be described as "better than most people think." His 130 OPS+ puts him in the same offensive category as Arenado, so his present ability to hit should not be in question. The catch is that he will be 36 in December and still has two fairly expensive years, so the Mets need to ask if they can make a comparable upgrade with less commitment of resources. I think a lot will depend on how JD Davis looks once he gets activated.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Kris Bryant: No years.Eduardo Escobar: No years and playing for last-place team.José Ramirez: No years and playing for a second-place team, but one that may fade enough by the end of the month. My guess is that they'll get somebody who's more of a consistent hitter than an outstanding hitter, who can play a bunch of positions. Or two guys like that, the lesser of whom will be Asdrubal Cabrera. Depth moves.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Donaldson can flat out hit, and he'd be a perfect fit for us.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 "Tight hammy". From last night: https://www.mlb.com/news/josh-donaldson-exits-with-right-hamstring-tightness?game_pk=633439https://www.mlb.com/news/josh-donaldson-exits-with-right-hamstring-tightness?game_pk=633439

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Mets looking for a third baseman? I know of a third baseman who's got 10 HR's in 300 AB's through the ASG break and is OPSplussing 114.It's this guy....................[FIMG=333]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61BlCXPP5oL._AC_SL1118_.jpg[/FIMG]
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 I don't know what the Mets' needs actually are — or at least what they'll be the last two months of the season. I can picture them falling apart and I can picture them tearing away from the division (although the Nats are probably the biggest real threat). Third base could be a real strength for them going forward. So if they really want to muscle up, the best move may be indeed to get a versatile guy like Kelly Johnson. Or Lowrie. Only not Lowrie. But I always want to stand pat.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 I will be scouting Donaldson and other potential Twins trade targets in person tomorrow night.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 Lowrie would break both his hips going up the ramp at Citi Field. You can't convince me otherwise.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I always liked that his name referenced his infraction.
