Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I know there's probably more to come, since Tyrone Taylor is very likely to be dealt, and perhaps Holmes, Weaver, and Robert as well. (And maybe others?) But so far, I'm not very impressed. They don't look like they're reloading for 2027 and it doesn't look like their Top Thirty (or whatever) prospect list is significantly improved. The only acquisition I'm excited about (and I'm using the word pretty loosely) so far is Émilien Pitre. Maybe he's good enough and close enough to displace Marcus Semien next year. Maybe he can be that Steve Henderson I've been hoping for.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I'm underwhelmed so far. No blockbusters yet, in fact it seems like a lot of filler. Pitre is the only one that seems like a legitimate prospect in the future. And there's only five hours left with a lot of names still on the table that I'd like to see traded. Still time to get stuff done, but the clock is ticking.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 You keep Weaver if this is the type of return being offered. Would have kept Brazo too. If all you get for Holmes are lottery picks then keep him and offer the QO. Ultimately resigning him is our goal, and the QO will dampen his market. MFS62 and seawolf17 2
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I disagreed with CF about Peralta in another thread but here I absolutely agree: barring a massive haul, far better than what’s been seen so far, you keep Holmes and either get him back for 1 year on the QO, get QO picks, or re-sign him.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 How "massive" is a massive haul? The guy has a broken leg. Trade him!

Significantly better than what they’ve received for any other players. His leg has healed and the Mets badly need starting pitching for 2027. Trading him doesn’t help that.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 2027 is a player option year for Holmes. Perhaps mgmt doesn't like how the winds are blowing on that front.
Radar Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Well we have taken a bad team Mr. Stearns and made it worst. Maybe a few prospects that really help our farm. Bottom line at end of day is Cohen and Stearns in my eye look pretty bad maybe bottom of league bad for.money spent. Sorry I didn't expect anymore from these guys. Can't fire the owner and I fear his ego won't allow him to fire Mr. Genius. It's not today's moves but the position the Cohen/Stearns team is got us in while spending all this money. PATHETIC!! Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 News of trades are still rolling in, so maybe the savior blockbuster trade is still to come.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I'm certainly not happy with Stearns , but I'll look at this fire sale as loading up and going big for next season, whenever that is ,last chance saloon for Stearns

We may disagree on this and that's fine. We're both fans of this team at the end of the day. But when I look at Stearns tenure and what he's paid and what I perceived as his arrogance and I'm the smartest guy around and where we were when he came here and where we are now I don't think he's lived up to his supposed reputation and certainly not to his pay grade. So no I don't think I'll be flipping on him anytime soon. I do appreciate your opinions though.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I get trading the guys with the expiring contracts. I don’t get trading the guys either control unless they are not planning on contending next season.

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Unfortunately, "sellers" at the trade deadline are generally acquiring prospects in return for established players that are expected to provide immediate help for the remainder of the year and possibly the next. As a result, I believe it is rather unrealistic to expect our sell off of short-term rentals to yield any significant help for 2027. What truly concerns me, is that for the Mets to become legitimate contenders in 2027, Stearns will have to do a far better rebuild of the roster than he did in the past off-season.

The arrogance is key here. And I don't mean "He's smug, i want to punch him". I mean his unwillingness to adjust. He's been pretty steadfast about his philosophies since he got here. No long term contracts. Beat the aging curve. Sign guys with traits he likes, even if the results are mixed. Well that pretty much blew up in his face. The last two years have been disasters. Different types of disasters, but both miserable. The downside to his "short term only" philosophy, is the type of player open to taking that type of deal. (Injury prone/inconsistent/unproven/old). He clearly thought the market would come back to him last winter and had to make panic moves when it didn't. As far as player performance, he cleaned out all the coaches, some of whom had success before he arrived, and put in his own guys. Guys who believe in his philosophies. That was a disaster too. I've never seen a team underperform so badly. It will be interesting to see if he's humbled and learns from his mistakes. Or if his arrogance causes him to double down. Radar and seawolf17 2
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Signing Tarik Skubal to a big deal this offseason will be a good way to show he is changing. Centerfield 1
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 A lot of infielders. I think that's a good idea anyway.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 It was as good as could be reasonably expected. It looks a lot better with Rojas.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Of all of these, I’m underwhelmed by the Peralta return, and I would not have traded Weaver. The return on Holmes is exciting.

Later
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I think we're still judging the Peralta return by what we dealt. I'm all for blaming Stearns for overpaying in the first place for a pretty good pitcher on paper, but Peralta isn't pretty good right now.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I think one way of looking at the Peralta trade is to compare what we gave to Milwaukee to what we got from Tampa. Are Sproat and Williams better than yesterday's haul? I would've preferred we loaded up on arms rather than infielders. Maybe its just me but i think the likelihood of one of the pitchers making it is greater--and the shuttle from AAA to CitiField certainly bears that out. I like the return from Chicago (N) and Pittsburgh but am having a hard time getting excited about any of these guys. I suppose they are additions to the Baty/Vientos/Mauricio carousel. Brazoban was a personal favorite--reminded me a lot of Jose Butto whom I thought we'd miss....so maybe HB will be equally forgettable.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I'd trade em all for Bruin Agbayani. All the others are bonus.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 2 hours ago, Marshmallowmilkshake said: I get trading the guys with the expiring contracts. I don’t get trading the guys either control unless they are not planning on contending next season. The only guys dealt away who qualify as 'under control' are Weaver (one year) and Brazoban (three more). With both I suspect their justification is: a) selling high. Relievers are notoriously tough to rely on from year to year. And while Brazzy's resume is unusually short for a 36 y/o, this was, by far, the best year of his career. ERA ('22 - '25): 3.73; ERA in '26: 2.56; WHIP ('22-'25): 1.33; WHIP in '26: 1.006 ... And I KNOW few if any of you/us or NYM fans in general, were sayin 'Oh good, it's Brazoban coming in form the pen' prior to this season. b) he'll be 37 y/o next season Weaver is younger and even better but rewind all the way back to 2023 and you'll see Luke Weaver traded twice in season due at least in part to the 6.40 ERA and 1.58 WHIP he pitched to that year. So the 'selling high' and unpredictability things again. Raley, Taylor, Holmes (player option), Peralta were all free to leave in seven weeks time. Marshmallowmilkshake 1

I hate to break it to you this team is worst since Boy Genius came to town. Not referring to trade dead line specifically. But yes as for the deadline we should have extended Holmes and kept Weaver in my opinion. The few good moves he's made just left. This team on paper and on the field is worse than when Boy Genuis arrived to the tune of 10 million a year to be a fail. Further the deadline is designed to get worse for bad teams but it is also for good teams to add. We can agree to disagree on this.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 4 Posted August 4 "We can agree to disagree" is always a good way of saying one has no intention of backing up what they claim.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I'm with Radar on this. They're right - this team is demonstrably worse now than it was when he took over, and the future overall looks grimmer too. For a team that is supposed to be able to afford the best and the brightest, they're just... not. I saw it in one of these threads here yesterday from someone, and it's spot on: If Stearns' preference is for short-term deals so he's not hamstrung moving forward, then you're going to get guys who will sign short-term deals. Superstars... don't sign short-term deals. They just don't. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you.
