G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 Mets calling up Francisco Alvarez this weekend.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 I called it!I mean, I sort of predicted it and I still don't believe it.Bad news for the Braves, I think. Still, I kind of wish this was kept on the down-low until shortly before game-time.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 It's wild that he wasn't up here a month, two months ago. But sure. The guy plays out the string for AAA, and then gets thrust headfirst into a do or die division series with 6 games left. And then there's an argument to be made that he should be the #1 catcher in the playoffs.Feels like bad process to me.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 "Welcome to the bigs, you're the DH in the biggest game of the season."Who goes? Ruf or Vientos?
duan Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Vientos clearly.Unless something else has gone wonky.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 He should be behind the plate, not DH'ing. Today AND tomorrow. He's caught both deGrom & Scherzer at AAA this year.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Fact of Fun-ness: Joel Sherman of The Post was scooped on this by five minutes. The first to break the story was Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase. Meet the new sheriff.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Some of these Spanish speaking reporters often break the news first it seems. Sometimes by hours.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 What uniform number should he wear? I'd like to see him in a 15 or an 8, but a 7 would be good too.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 color me excited to see what he can do!
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 15 should be retired. but how about 69? We're going to get to that episode of Mets on Tap soon and have no one to name the episode after. 78?
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Better late than never, I guess.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 So this is the future, starting tonight?
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 8 always makes me think catcher, maybe because an 8 looks like a guy squatting behind home plate. Or a snowman. But 8 is probably in permanent limbo.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 I'd like to see him in a one-digit number. The only ones currently available are 5, 7, and 8. As noted, 8 seems to be in limbo and I'm pretty sure nobody will ever wear 5 again.Maybe they can switch him to 9 next year if Nimmo leaves. If it was up to me, I think I'd give him 7. Or maybe 35. I don't know! I'm glad I don't have to make these important decisions.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 If they're at all of the mind to bring #8 out of whatever limbo it's in, this would be a great place to start.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Eight is also associated with catchers because when numbers were originally linked to positions in the batting order, the catcher typically batted eighth.I think he'll get a September number (probably 78 or 88), before moving to something more permanently (yes, eight would be greight) next year. Also, depending on how he does over the next week, a September number might be what he chooses to be his permanent number. He's swaggery enough that he seems like he'd like something quirky as part of his brand.

Here's a two day old piece claiming that Carter deserves a statue - never mind retiring his number. It's straight out of the retard school of creative writing and insightful thought and repeats all the tired and stupid Gary Carter tropes, you know, like last piece to the puzzle and a big World Series hit and blah blah blah. Straw and Doc and Keith had at least three times the Mets career Carter did but Carter deserves a statue because the Mets got him after Keith, Doc and Straw, not before. As if that even matters. And Keith Mitchell also had a big World Series hit in the Bill Buckner inning. Just as big as Carter's. And he was even laster than Carter. A laster piece to the puzzle. So let's all put up a statue of Kevin Mitchell in front of Citi Field. Who are these nuts who think Carter's number should be retired because he got a big WS hit? They must be QANoner's.Read this piece of horseshit: (Even money the writer was too young to even see Carter play with the Mets).5 Mets players who have earned a statue outside Citi Field4) NY Mets catcher Gary CarterGary Carter, or "KID," was the final piece to the puzzle for the 1986 championship team. During the 1985 off-season, he was traded from the Montreal Expos to the Mets. Despite short tenure with the team, Carter is a top-five catcher in Mets history.Carter had one of the most memorable debuts in baseball with his new ball club. He hit a walk-off home run in the 10th against former Met Neil Allen on Opening Day 1985 in Queens. He finished sixth in the MVP race in his first year with 32 home runs and 100 RBIs.Game 6 of the 1986 World Series saw the Mets down to their final out, and champagne bottles were waiting for the Boston Red Sox in the dugout to celebrate. Carter refused to make the last out to end the Mets' season. A single to left would set the most remarkable comeback in baseball history. Base hits from Kevin Mitchell and Ray Knight would bring home Carter. What came next was a wild pitch from Bob Stanley and an error by Bill Buckner that won the Mets the game and eventually the World Series. If it wasn't for Carter's heroic act, the Mets would most likely have just one World Series trophy in their display room.https://risingapple.com/posts/ny-mets-5-players-deserve-statue-citi-field/2https://risingapple.com/posts/ny-mets-5-players-deserve-statue-citi-field/2
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Carter aside, the notion that the Mets need to add another five statues outside of Citi Field is also ridiculous.

I didn't bother addressing that point because it was like #30 on my list of gripes from that article. But yes.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 My preference would be to give Alvarez number 8. Maybe he can wear it for 15 years and they can retire it for him, and the Gary Carter fans can pretend that it was done for Gary. They can even invite Carter's grandchildren to the ceremony.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 As Gary Cohen might say, "Fascinating".The short term is obviously more important right now, but I can't help but wonder how and if the Mets might dispose of McCann over the winter.
