Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 That's actually kinda clever.I approve. Not big on the winged G, or the wordmark, necessarily, but the name works.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 swing and a miss, what a surprise.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Not too bad.Could have been worse.Later
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Author Posted July 23, 2021 I thought it might be "Spiders". "Guardians" sounds like an insurance company but it's strong, the logo is good, and if Tom Hanks likes it so who are we to object?
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Guardian sounds like Copganda nonsense, the font is basically the same and it feels blocky and like it's still invoking native american stuff, but maybe that last bit is just my association with the old name. I like the concept of wings on the ball but it's clunky and i'm not sure how it makes sense with the name or with Cleveland
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Blah. I was really hoping for Spiders. Also, I had no idea that Tom Hanks had any connection to Cleveland.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Spiders would have been more fun without a doubt, but you almost have to respect 'em for not going with that one
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Impressive video--I'm surprised they were able to keep this under wraps, with no leaks. Nicely done.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 my only quibble is that i don't like the angularization of the script. it looks fairly terrible. not as bad as the winged G, but still bad. hopefully there wil be more revisions...? because, damn, it kinda looks like they just grabbed these off of an old unaffiliated N-64 baseball game.but i'm ok with the names. spiders would have been better. it was both the easy and the bold choice. but guardians is fine. is there a local connection to the name, or just random fighty-type noun?
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Chad ochoseis wrote:=Ceetar post_id=72289 time=1627048605 user_id=102]swing and a miss, what a surprise.Huh? I mean, it's not my first choice, and having to explain to out-of-towners the whole idea of the Guardians of Transportation on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge is going to get old fast, but what's so awful about it?I would have gone with Spiders. I don't think anyone really needed to worry about people associating it with the losing culture they had back in the 1890s.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 It's too defensive. Too, well, guarded. It doesn't sound like something fun to be a part of.And “city of fire and water” sounds like the time the river caught on fire.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 My friend who is a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Baseball Team wonders if perhaps they meant Gardeners.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 is there a local connection to the name, or just random fighty-type noun?Apparently the name comes from some statues on a bridge. There's precedent for naming a team after a statue.https://1000logos.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/new_york_liberty_logo-394x500.png>dinosaur jesus wrote:And “city of fire and water” sounds like the time the river caught on fire.I assumed that that was a tongue-in-cheek reference to that very event, but maybe not. I don't know if Clevelanders have a sense of humor about that.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Teams change their logos/fonts all the time so I suspect those will evolve.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Progressive Field is located at the foot of the bridge with the Guardians. So there's definitely a connection.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 boy, they could've been a little more evocative of the winged headdresses on those guardians, and maybe pull in some sort of art deco vibe on the wordmark, no? instead there's this weird cheap angular bullshit that makes no sense. and doesn't even look modern. can't wait for it to get ripped to shreds by uniwatch!

A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Who knows what the unis will actually look like, but I hope there's more of a new identity with the new brand. But hey, it's not Indians any more!
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I give it a 10/10 on the meh-o-meter. Well done! I've been to Cleveland and I still never heard of those statues. I mean, if they wanted to associate with something Cleveland-related that people have heard of they should have gone with the Cleveland Rocks. Or even the River Fires.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I was in Camp Spiders, but things never go my way these days. Seeing some footageof the bridge earlier on the news tips the approval scale.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Learning about the bridge thing, I like it more. Good on you, Clevelanders.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I think I'll have to chew on this one before I have anything meaningful to offer. If you cover the "Guar" with your left thumb, it looks exactly like an Indians chestplate logo (minus the smiling shmoe), and I guess maintaining that sort of continuity was a big part of what was asked of the rebranders, but it kind of makes it feel like a halfhearted half-measure to me, like my wife keeping pictures of her ex around.I think we as a nation are leaning on the authority of Tom Hanks wuh-HAY too much. Hanks is from the San Francisco Bay area, but you know who's from Cleveland? Jim Fuckin' Lovell, the astronaut he played, is.Not identifiable enough? How about Emmy-winner Drew Carey? How about Oscar-winner Halle Berry? How about Grammy-winner Tracy Chapman?Nobody hates Tracy Chapman. But the program needs a white male-io because they need to reassure the blanco base that, hey, just because we acknowledged the dignity of a minority group doesn't mean we're hating on you guys. What voice says, "It's gonna be alright, Dad" better than Tom Hanks? As I was saying, I may need some time.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 on the bright side, there's a pretty natural branding tie-in that they could do in right field...https://www.kroger.com/product/images/large/front/0001700006837>maybe with freebie giveaways for the luck fans in attendance!
