From what I've read, my concern over Stroman's pitching to contact with a lousy defense around him is offset by the fact that he has one of the lowest HR-allowed rates in baseball.

He is an excellent defender (giving the Mets two of the top fielding SPs in MLB--deGrom being the other).

BVW is seen as a "disruptor" who now has more of an advantage in a limited SP market for possible trades. He can keep all of them, trade one of them, trade some of them, take the return from a trade and trade that for something else. Diaz is also in demand.

Nothing may happen but count on Martino, Rosenthal and the rest to fill up the time between now and Wednesday at 4 PM with every possible scenario.

Yes, let the wild, baseless speculation begin.

If they trade Wheeler and get a plus defensive CF back, they still need to Roto-Rooter the bullpen. Unless the plan is to move Vargas to the pen. There's also the Diaz trade possibility, in which case every starter better throw complete games because otherwise they're doomed.

I honestly can't figure out what they're trying to do here.

I'd love this deal if the Mets had 10 more wins. Stroman has more than held his own in the hardest division to pitch in. It actually makes less sense to trade Thor now -- he's under contract for longer, and Kay could have filled a rotation spot in the long term. Getting Stroman means we're committed to competing next year --which we can do if we're willing to add another $30M or so in payroll. We don't have a playoff team right now, or even a .500 one, and we're rapidly running out of prospect pieces. So this move will ultimately be judged in the context of whatever else happens.

I believe the Mets are trying to make a 2019 run for the wild card. Why not. Move Andres Gimenez and Dominic Smith while Brodie is at it.

Seems odd that Noah goes in that scenario. I would guess Noah goes for a primo OF or young SP. Our closer I have headed To Boston for Benintendi. Goodbye Nimmo.

All wild speculation

Welcome Marcus Stroman! I like him from what I know about him. Hope he gets a chance to flourish in New York. Will feel a lot lest positive if Syndergaard is traded, though. Maybe by bolstering the rotation they can move someone to the pen and make it stronger too, although I don't know who that would be.

It'd have to be Vargas, although arguably he's been their second-best pitcher this year. But someone in the rotation is definitely going to be traded, making it a moot point.

I like Stroman but we have to see how the rest of this plays out. i have a feeling we'll be pretty grumpy by Wednesday evening.

I don't know much about Marcus Stroman, except that he doesn't seem to be anywhere near good enough to warrant the term "ace", which I've heard tossed around. Nice ERA this year, but it was 5.54 a year ago. 1.28 career WHIP suggests good, but not great pitcher.

I heard Anthony Kay only projected to a mid rotation guy, but I heard that there was a real high upside for Woods Richardson. But he's 18 and a pitching prospect, so what do you know.

I hope that this deal is not a justification for dealing Noah Syndergaard, because that would be beyond dumb.

Yeah, he was apparently https://nypost.com/2019/07/29/marcus-stromans-yankees-desire-confirmed-after-ugly-clubhouse-scene/not so enthusiastic a short time earlier.

I'd chalk that up to a hack and a rag trying to stir the pot, making it easier on fans if he's part of a package in a couple of days.

Just immaturity after thinking for weeks he'd land in midst of a legit playoff race.

Compare that to Delgado who once used his no-trade clause to NIX a trade from the Jays to a contender.

i mean, they're my favorite team and all, but i'd probably be a little disappointed to find that i was going to be a met. at the very least, i'd have reason to be concerned about what that might mean for my health, development, and mental well-being, amirite?

Ashie quits on another.

I'm always a little disturbed by talk about who is and isn't a stud. Animal husbandry seems a weird metaphor for quality baseball.

Looks like he'll be wearing No. 7. According to favorite Mets uniform number reference site, I see's our first pitcher to wear 7 -- worn for so many years by Mr. Kranepool! .

He's smiling a lot for a kid who seems to have Big Bird's dead corpse laying behind him in his backyard.

I am no longer an ESPN paid subscriber, but I can only assume that noted Mets-hater Keith Law didn't like the Stroman trade as he jerks off to prospects like they are all the second coming. Meanwhile over at The Athletic, Former GM Jim Bowden says the Mets did great:

https://theathletic.com/1110927/2019/08/01/bowden-trade-deadline-grades-for-all-30-mlb-teams/https://theathletic.com/1110927/2019/08/01/bowden-trade-deadline-grades-for-all-30-mlb-teams/

New York Mets

Grade: A-

Acquired RHP Marcus Stroman from Blue Jays in exchange for LHP Anthony Kay and RHP Simeon Woods Richardson. Traded RHP Wilmer Font to Blue Jays for cash. Acquired RHP Brooks Pounders from Indians for cash. Traded LHP Jason Vargas and $2.9m to Phillies in exchange for C Austin Bossart.

From Wednesday night: The New York Mets shocked the baseball world Sunday when they outbid their crosstown rival Yankees and several other contending teams to land right-handed starting pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays, intending to keep him as an important part of their starting rotation this year and next. In return, the Mets sent their top left-handed pitching prospect Anthony Kay, their first-round pick and No. 31 overall in the June 2016 MLB Draft, along with right-handed pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson, amounting to a solid but not special return for the rebuilding Blue Jays. The Mets realize this offseason free-agent market for starting pitching was tough and they wanted to get a headstart on building for 2020.

The Mets kept starters Noah Syndergaard and Zach Wheeler and closer Edwin Díaz, which allows them to be more competitive the rest of the year and sets them up for 2020, especially if they can re-sign Wheeler.

If the Mets can improve their defense and add a bat or two in the offseason, they should be right back to being contenders in 2020.

Well, in defense of Law, prospects are his beat.

And while I know the Christian faith isn't your bag, and while many denominations have different rites and creeds, please let me assure you that jerking off to the Second Coming isn't really how it's done.

Also, later reports (with our own Mike Fucking Puma in the middle of them) have suggested that the closed clubhouse thingy with the Jays wasn't because Stroman was pissed about not going to the Yankees, but rather that he received some anonymous shit talking from management personnel on the way out the door. Keith Law himself, among some others, have called out these comments as something more than cheap and condescending, but also racist.

Sorry if you took offense, I meant to insult Keith not Christians.

I saw that there was apparently some anger on the way out the door between Stroman and management, but who suggested it was racial? any evidence? did anyone involved say something? or just the talking heads who need to generated baseless controversy?

No offense at all. You just conjured an insane scene in my head.

Keith Law, among others suggested it was racial.

He speculated based on what? I definitely see him as the type to conjur racism out of nothing, you mentioned Puma but I couldnt find it googling - did he say something?
