I can’t believe they didn’t fire him. The Mets are not serious.

I am not the biggest fan of Mendoza, but I don't believe that firing him will make much difference.  There are just too many holes in the Mets line up.  Stearns made a series of bets on players that were once good, banking on them to rebound to their prior level of play.  He appears to have greatly miscalculated and has stuck Mendoza and the Mets with a losing hand.  Ultimately, Mendoza will be the fall guy, but then there will be no one else to blame for the mess Stearns has made of the Mets.

I don’t think the players are quite possibly this bad. 
 

something is wrong in the clubhouse. Which could be a player problem of course and not a manager problem necessarily, but it falls on the manager to fix it - and he’s clearly not doing that. 
 

maybe nobody can but it’s time to try someone different. 
 

the team has had three deep stretches like this in his tenure. 
 

it’s time to put a stop to it.

As for personnel changes, you can only work with the answers available to you.  I don't think Texas is offering to reverse the Nimmo-for-Semien deal anytime soon.

They're going to have to bop their way out of this, or not.

The way I look at it. Regardless of what David Stearns has done or not done. 
 

If you look at the talent assembled for the 2025 team and had to guess the range of outcomes, 83 wins and missing the playoffs would be at the bottom of this projections. Or potentially below them. 
 

If you look at the talent assembled for the 2026 team and had to guess the range of outcomes, 9-19 would be well below any realistic projection. 
 

An underperforming team is on the manager. He has to go. 
 

And a team unwilling to acknowledge and make that move is one that is more concerned with being right than being good.

Imma guess this is the first time in baseball history that a GM's father is managing under him.

Though it is fair to say that time could be short for both of them.  The Phils employ a PoBO with a GM under him, so Preston Mattingly is just as viable a sacrificial lamb for president Dave Dombroski as Thomson was.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mendoza, but this is Stearns' team.  He's the one who let players walk and made bad trades.  The blame rests mostly with him.  But it'll be Mendoza getting it in the neck eventually.

Choosing (and retaining) Mendoza is also a Stearns choice.

As I’ve said earlier, I think Stearns’ seat is also warm but firing him in-season isn’t going to make a difference with this team.  Changing the manager might - and it’s not as if the team can fall to 6th place.
