Weaver threw 11 pitches and after the top of the 9th, the Mets knew they would also need to pitch the 10th in order to win.  I’d have left him in for the 9th.

Now Williams has thrown 17 pitches in the 9th and won’t go back for the 10th, and all the good relievers have been burned.

There were two issues with Zeile and the Cardinals that soured the relationship. in 1994 he lost a contentious arbitration hearing in which the Cardinals used his defensive struggles at third base against him, not acknowledging they moved him there and had him learn on the job. In 95, Zeile contended the team withdrew a contract extension offer after he injured a thumb in spring training.

Brutal. Zeile didn't mention the contract dispute at all.

He did say the Cards shit-canned Joe Torre the same day that he got traded to the Cubs. Gary pointed out that Torre was the guy who moved him from behind the dish to third, like Torre did when he played. Zeile said the Cards front office were so happy to get rid of them both that they had a celebratory toast to their departure. Gary sounded like he didn't remember any of that stuff. Zeile always seemed so inoffensive to me that I was kinda surprised anybody disliked him.

It was an interminable extra-inning Mets/Cardinals game in the Jerry Manuel era that broke everybody's patience and in my mind ultimately led to the free-runner regime.

Keith has a disc pinched in his back, giving him some pain and cutting off some function in his leg.  He was talking about it yesterday and expects to be fine, but wasn't looking forward to flying, also describing that it was interfering with more everyday stuff like negotiating stairs.  So I imagine getting treatment sooner rather than later spared him some difficulty.

Aw poor Keith

April 2010, 20 innings.  I believe Pelfrey got a save.  A glorious game.

Tony LaRussa kept pitching position players, and Manuel kept bunting.  Nobody wanted to win.

Not exactly Al Jackson against Bob Gibson, but reminding me of those inexorable losses to the Cards in the early years.

Semien's StatCast was already a collection of short, blue bars, but this year so far, it's shockingly bad.

More like Marcus Semen, amirite?

Is that what those short, translucent streaks are all over his StatCast page?

Blah.

Benge was too deep?

Looks like he hesitated a step and couldn't make it up

How do they lose a series to a team that is very openly not trying to contend? What happened to that offense after Opening Day?

The offense that was relying on a Semien bounceback, Robert returning to 2023 form, Vientos returning to 2024 form, Alvarez sustaining the improvements he made post-demotion to AAA, Baty sustaining the improvements he made in 2025, and a rookie who barely played at AAA?  That offense?

Mendoza doesn't strike me as the kind of manager who can even confess to there being a problem. His approach is all about propping up his guys in hopes that they have the ability to figure it out themselves.

You have to remember that much of their early offensive production on opening day against Skenes was primarily due to poor defense by Oneil Cruz.  First he misplayed a fly ball by Baty that should have been caught into a "triple" to allow 3 runs.  Had Cruz simply caught Baty's rather routine fly ball, the Mets would not have scored Soto from third on a sac fly. Then he whiffed on a routine fly that he lost in the sun.  Had Cruz made to routine catches that a MLB CF should make, the Mets would have scored one run (rather than 5) and Skenes would have escaped the 1st inning with a 2-1 lead.

Since that first game in which they were essentially gifted 4 runs and an very early exit by Skenes, the Mets have scored 10 runs in 50 innings.

Lindor also was picked off 1st base so badly that he didn't even make an attempt to return to the bag.  He just froze and was tagged out.

This team needs to wake up and get their act together.

Fire Mendy. Some might say it’s too early. I say it’s 6 months too late.

Five and a third and 92 pitches ... and done.

So you're saying they got a fab five (and 1/3) out of Freddie?
