He can neither run nor play defense anywhere near the level of Acuna, nor does he have anywhere near the positional versatility. Now, Baty can hit, which Acuna (and Robert?) don’t really do very well, so I’m sure he’s got a role. But it’s not supplanting Acuna.

So trading him was easy.Roberts has really crashed and burned the last two years. If the change of scenery from the calamitous Chisox helps him to bounce back even a little bit it'll be worth it. And it's basically a one-year commitment so it doesn't impede anyone's development.I would think they're out on Bellinger now, but they do still kinda need a left fielder. I guess they can cut and paste there, and they really need a starting arm that can go more than 4 2/3 innings.

And two of those places — left and center — were pretty soft targets to take and make his own if he really stepped up. When you keep enough talent in place, some of these problems solve themselves.But onward he goes. Twenty million spent on Luis Robert that could have gone in the Bellinger pot or elsewhere certainly indicates the team's lack of faith that Acuna had much to contribute.

Still a very good defensive CF and runs well. His hitting is the concern, but their is the potential that he regains his form if he can remain healthy. He should provide more offense than Taylor would. I would have preferred Bellinger, but you can't have everything. Time to address the rotation at this point.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) And while I'm certainly not counting on a Luis Robert return to his 2nd RoY and mid-pack MVP years, he is only two seasons removed from an All-Star/Silver-Slugger/130 OPS+/12th MVP year (2023), plus he doesn't even turn 29 until August. So that puts him into a category where a bounce-back is at least plausible. iow, he's not some old guy where you hope he can suddenly dial it back a half-decade or more and any rebound that does occur is likely more of a short-term 'dead cat bounce' kind of deal than it is a fountain of youth.
