Evaluating the Mets Deadline Deals

I know there's probably more to come, since Tyrone Taylor is very likely to be dealt, and perhaps Holmes, Weaver, and Robert as well. (And maybe others?) But so far, I'm not very impressed. They don't look like they're reloading for 2027 and it doesn't look like their Top Thirty (or whatever) prospect list is significantly improved.

The only acquisition I'm excited about (and I'm using the word pretty loosely) so far is Émilien Pitre. Maybe he's good enough and close enough to displace Marcus Semien next year. Maybe he can be that Steve Henderson I've been hoping for.

I'm underwhelmed so far. No blockbusters yet, in fact it seems like a lot of filler. Pitre is the only one that seems like a legitimate prospect in the future. And there's only five hours left with a lot of names still on the table that I'd like to see traded. Still time to get stuff done, but the clock is ticking.

You keep Weaver if this is the type of return being offered. 
 

Would have kept Brazo too. 
 

If all you get for Holmes are lottery picks then keep him and offer the QO. Ultimately resigning him is our goal, and the QO will dampen his market.

I disagreed with CF about Peralta in another thread but here I absolutely agree:  barring a massive haul, far better than what’s been seen so far, you keep Holmes and either get him back for 1 year on the QO, get QO picks, or re-sign him.

Significantly better than what they’ve received for any other players.

His leg has healed and the Mets badly need starting pitching for 2027.  Trading him doesn’t help that.

2027 is a player option year for Holmes. Perhaps mgmt doesn't like how the winds are blowing on that front.

Well we have taken a bad team Mr. Stearns and made it worst. Maybe a few prospects that really help our farm. Bottom line at end of day is Cohen and Stearns in my eye look pretty bad maybe bottom of league bad for.money spent. Sorry I didn't expect anymore from these guys. Can't fire the owner and I fear his ego won't allow him to fire Mr. Genius. It's not today's moves but the position the Cohen/Stearns team is got us in while spending all this money. PATHETIC!!

Do you really think there is a trade to be had that is going to cause Radar to flip?

I'm certainly not happy with Stearns , but I'll look at this fire sale as loading up and going big for next season,  whenever that is ,last chance saloon for Stearns

Sorry, Edgy. We may disagree on this and that's fine. We're both fans of this team at the end of the day. But when I look at Stearns tenure and what he's paid and what I perceived as his arrogance and I'm the smartest guy around and where we were when he came here and where we are now I don't think he's lived up to his supposed reputation and certainly not to his pay grade. So no I don't think I'll be flipping on him anytime soon. I do appreciate your opinions though.

I get trading the guys with the expiring contracts. I don’t get trading the guys either control unless they are not planning on contending next season.

Unfortunately, "sellers" at the trade deadline are generally acquiring prospects in return for established players that are expected to provide immediate help for the remainder of the year and possibly the next.  As a result, I believe it is rather unrealistic to expect our sell off of short-term rentals to yield any significant help for 2027.  

What truly concerns me, is that for the Mets to become legitimate contenders in 2027, Stearns will have to do a far better rebuild of the roster than he did in the past off-season.

The arrogance is key here.  And I don't mean "He's smug, i want to punch him".  I mean his unwillingness to adjust.  He's been pretty steadfast about his philosophies since he got here.  No long term contracts.  Beat the aging curve.  Sign guys with traits he likes, even if the results are mixed.

Well that pretty much blew up in his face.  The last two years have been disasters.  Different types of disasters, but both miserable.  The downside to his "short term only" philosophy, is the type of player open to taking that type of deal.  (Injury prone/inconsistent/unproven/old).  He clearly thought the market would come back to him last winter and had to make panic moves when it didn't.  

As far as player performance, he cleaned out all the coaches, some of whom had success before he arrived, and put in his own guys.  Guys who believe in his philosophies.  That was a disaster too.  I've never seen a team underperform so badly.

It will be interesting to see if he's humbled and learns from his mistakes.  Or if his arrogance causes him to double down.

Signing Tarik Skubal to a big deal this offseason will be a good way to show he is changing.

It was as good as could be reasonably expected.  It looks a lot better with Rojas.

Of all of these, I’m underwhelmed by the Peralta return, and I would not have traded Weaver.

I fear his definition of loading up will be spending a lot of money for one (maybe two) name player(s) rather than going (money or trades) for a balanced roster.

I think we're still judging the Peralta return by what we dealt.  I'm all for blaming Stearns for overpaying in the first place for a pretty good pitcher on paper, but Peralta isn't pretty good right now.
