Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 This one hurts. My Scherzer buzz is gone, and now I'm hungover on Marcus to the Cubs (reported first by Marcus Stroman) Stroman was a lot of fun, and hell, he was one of the more reliable and sturdy pitchers the Mets have. Now we're bumping up more injury guys and hoping.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 To me he seemed just too driven by real and imaginary threats to rely on all that much. That said he had a lot of ability without all that and was fun to watch.Took it upon himself to declare #7 sacred and half the fan base and the team believed him.Sat out a year we could have used him.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 Kinda sucks, not surprised, at least he's not a Phillie or Brave.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 Gave the Mets innings and ground balls. Both were appreciated. Certainly didn't mind calling attention to himself.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 I guess Max Scherzer is a fine replacement for Marcus Stroman. (They even have the same initials!) But each potential starter that slips away from the Mets is a lost opportunity. I don't have much faith in the current Mets rotation. They need a lot more depth and I hope they can find a way to get it.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 In a year of injuries and breakdowns, he was one Met who took it wire to wire. #notnothin
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 I loved watching him pitch. I loved watching him field. One of my favorites and I will miss him.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 Looks like the Mets prefer Carrasco and Walker over Stroman. Also, is there gonna be a lefty starter?

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 I really wanted the Mets to make an attempt to retain Stroman. He was the Mets best and most reliable pitcher last season. DeGrom was outstanding, but he wasn't reliable or dependable. Stroman has some hot dog in him, but he was fun to watch.I wish him well with the Cubs, just not when facing the Mets.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 He signed for fewer years and less money than I expected.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 3 years / $71 Mil. - Would have slotted perfectly in the 3rd spot in the rotation. The Mets are supposedly still targeting pitching (well, once the CBA is settled). It will be interesting to see who they get and the terms of the deal compared to Stroman's deal with the Cubs.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I still think another starter should be their top priority. I liked Stroman a lot and wanted him back. They had the opportunity to extend him on their terms last offseason once he signed the QO, and apparently chose not to.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Long Island guy, outspoken, smart, helluva pitcher. Really enjoyed rooting for him.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Anthony DiComo and Jim Duquette were talking about Stroman on Mets Hot Stove. Implied that he may have been a bad influence in the clubhouse and said that Scherzer is an upgrade over Stroman. I don't know about the bad influence thing, but Scherzer/Stroman isn't an either/or, so that spin doesn't make any sense at all.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 There certainly seemed to be something mercurial about the guy. Hard to tell if it was an issue. I see where it might be.What a weird offseason. Instead of weeks of drama, we just wake up one morning and a guy has a new uniform.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 damn, i totally woudla brought him back for that money. i would think the mets would have too. dunno. he was exciting and fun to watch. i'll miss him. he was very out front with racial equality issues and i liked that.
duan Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I did like his fielding a lot. I also liked that he was atypical. He could have used staying off twitter enough to not like posts calling people racial slurs.

Absolutely. But you don't know shit about the clubhouse, Middle Aged White Guys. Sit this one out.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 He was a bit of a jerk, but he took the ball and gave it his all. He would have been the perfect final piece to the rotation.

We have no idea what went on in that clubhouse with Stroman, especially since Covid. Me, I don't know, but if it turns out that Stroman was a difficult and polarizing asshole or something like that, I won't be so surprised. Not that I'm hoping for, or even expecting any revelation like that.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted December 2, 2021 Author Posted December 2, 2021 spoiler alert: media wasn't in the clubhouse this year. Which is why they threw such a hissy fit when McNeil and Lindor refused to dish dirt to them. You know which other clubhouse they weren't in? the Nationals. or the Dodgers. Maybe they got super nuanced about it, I'm only going off Grimm's recap of Mets Hot Stove, but I doubt it. I'm gonna need at the very least actual quotes from actual people in that clubhouse before I believe that. Did they say McNeil was a bad clubhouse guy? Because if we've gotten any evidence on who's a bad presence, it's him. Also some of Stroman's teammates showed up and volunteered their time to his super cool baseball clinic this summer, something the media mostly failed to talk about.

Almost no one says DiComo or Healey should "be quieter on Twitter"You are right that there's long been stereotypes that the media not so subtly allude to that don't stand up to scrutiny where the inference is often that there's a 'hustling white guy' whereas it seems like if the player is a person of colour they're often either a 'flashy latino' or a 'sulky black guy' (or whatever sweeping generalisation you're having yourself - PJ McCann didn't hang around long enough to be labelled a drunken paddy). However, effectively endorsing someone saying "Anthony DiComo is a WOP" is pretty clumsy and stupid and for a man who regularly pronounces how much he thinks about things to do it shows that maybe he doesn't think about things as much as he should. Good Luck to Marcus Stroman, I wish him no ill, I would have been happy if the mets had signed him and he can be as loud as he likes on twitter it just may affect what people think of him. He has no reason to care what I think of him in the scheme of life, but I can't say it didn't have an impact.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 yeah. That's fair. I don't think he's a "thinker" so to speak, just willing to speak UP about some of the injustices and stuff he sees, which is important. I could do without the pseudo-religious mindfullness mumbo jumbo too. The wop thing is a poor look, I suspect he just doesn't like DiComo and was happy to pile on before realizing. (I actually had to look up the term myself)
vtmet7 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2021 Posted December 7, 2021 feels like we lost Walt Terrell without being rewarded with HoJo in return...
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2021 Posted December 14, 2021 I always thought of him as "Stroman the Yeoman," after R. Crumb's fantastic character Shuman the Human . Now that he's moved on to another team, that name seems more appropriate than ever.In fact, we should change the spelling of the phrase "Move On" to "Mo Vaughn," which also seems appropriate to me.
