seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 IF this happens, and IF deGrom is healthy, holy shit at the top of this rotation next year. (We're going to play .400 baseball because the other three starters will still be terrible, but hey, whaddya gonna do.)Carrasco, Taijuan, and someone else they sign (Rondon? Cobb? Kikuchi?).https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/starting-pitcher/available/https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/starting-pitcher/available/Carrasco and Walker: 1-13, 6.63 in the second half last year. I definitely still have... concerns.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 That's a good point. We'll lose the first two games 1-0 and 2-1, then lose the next three 8-4, 10-7, and 13-9.Baseball!

Scherzer doesn't want to play for the Mets. If they give him $30 million or $60 million more than anyone else, sure, but if offers are even remotely comparable there's no way he's coming to Queens. It's Uncle Steve's money, but I wish he'd show Stroman a little [CROSSOUT]cash[/CROSSOUT] love.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 This sounds to me like they're destined to be left at the altar. Which is fine I suppose.I like Scherzer tho. I saw him irl one time and the effect of his different-colored eyes was spooky

Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Nov. 29, 10:36 a.m.The Mets are re-engaged in talks with Max Scherzer, with negotiations coming to a head, reports SNY's Andy Martino.Martino reported on Sunday that the Mets had offered Scherzer roughly $42 million per year over three or four years. With the CBA expiring on Dec. 1 and a lockout likely looming, Scherzer is expected to make his free agent decision at some point on Monday. As the Mets have been negotiating with Scherzer, two of their other pitching targets -- Kevin Gausman and Jon Gray -- have signed elsewhere.Gausman landed with the Toronto Blue Jays and Gray signed with the Texas Rangers.According to Martino, if the Mets don't wind up with Scherzer, they are likely to turn to the trade market to fill their starting rotation need.Guess there is something they don't like about Stroman, or his asking price is too high.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Sounds like it's gonna happen
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Not sure if I buy the Stroman-Mets-disinterest slant being thrown around onsome fronts. I think there's a pecking order to these things and right now thepecking is on Max. Watch if they don't land him and then sign Stro' everyone'sgonna be all they settled for second best option. I want Stro' back either way the Max things go (just for posting posterity sake)
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Wow, Max for 3 years, $130M. It happened.

Stro, at least from his own tweets, wants to be a Met (I don't think Scherzer really does). The longer the Scherzer deal drags on without resolution, the more I feel he will be signing elsewhere. As the Mets spend all their time and energy trying to close with Max, the more they may see the other options (Stroman, Ray, & Rodon) disappearing from the market in this, race against the clock, signing frenzy.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Well all indication is the owners are going to mandate that they can't sign anyone else after Wednesday night, so might have to wait around regardless. But they still desperately NEED Stroman, or someone of that caliber. Even if this Scherzer thing finalizes. They probably still need a Matz type AFTER that too.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 The last 3 bats the Mets signed will be in their age 33 season and Max will be 37, so they're outlandishly in "win now" mode, so I say fuck it, throw Stro some dough (and Javy while you're at it).
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Yeah, they're all in with this move. Not crazy about this deal but it's better than sitting on their hands I guess. I'm not looking forward to Max's age 39 season, though.

The Scherzer deal is being announced as imminent by many sources. Though, MLB.com and ESPN have neither declared it a done deal ("finalizing") as of this moment.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 The only thing that bothers me about the 40 or 43 million dollars a year is that I'm not making 40 or 43 million dollars a year.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I'd be happy with half that! Or one percent of that.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Yeah, I could probably get by on $433,333 a year. Apparently other teams weren't willing to go for three years and nobody wanted to match the AAV. So money talks.Still need another starting pitcher, though. DeGrom/Scherzer, then a big dropoff to Walker/Carrasco/Megill or Peterson is not enough to get you through 162.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 so with stroman out of the picture, and there seemingly being a need for, if not a reliable #3 pitcher, at least a #3 with potential.... where do the mets turn next? or are they done?the next two pitchers out there are rodon and kershaw. kershaw would be delightful if healthy, but i don't know how healthy he could be. is that the kind of move where, hey if it works, we kick ass, and if not, we're still got depth available in all the other guys we have? either way, between the work ethic and attitude, i feel like we'd have a hell of clubhouse. next up down the line are KH Kim, Grienke, and.. uh... yusei kikuchi or... yeesh.. michael pineda. or do you think we'd pivot and look to make a trade, perhaps for a luis castillo from the reds? you tell me.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I think they'll try to sign the best of whoever remains. And a trade isn't out of the question either. I doubt they'll trade prospects like Mauricio or Baty or Alvarez, but would be more inclined to trade from the big league roster, guys like Smith or McNeil or Davis.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Yusei Kikuchi appears to be on their radar. He's a LH SP, was good enough to make the AL All-Star team, and then faded enough to be left off the Mariners' playoff roster. I have some knowledge of him as he was on my fantasy team for a good part of last year (he faded enough that I cut him). He was indeed great and then, erratic, and then bad.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusei_Kikuchihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusei_Kikuchihttps://www.fangraphs.com/players/yusei-kikuchi/20633/stats?position=Phttps://www.fangraphs.com/players/yusei-kikuchi/20633/stats?position=P
