Yeah, this. Scherzer doesn't want to play for the Mets. If they give him $30 million or $60 million more than anyone else, sure, but if offers are even remotely comparable there's no way he's coming to Queens.

Martino reported on Sunday that the Mets had offered Scherzer roughly $42 million per year over three or four years. With the CBA expiring on Dec. 1 and a lockout likely looming, Scherzer is expected to make his free agent decision at some point on Monday. As the Mets have been negotiating with Scherzer, two of their other pitching targets -- Kevin Gausman and Jon Gray -- have signed elsewhere. Gausman landed with the Toronto Blue Jays and Gray signed with the Texas Rangers. According to Martino, if the Mets don't wind up with Scherzer, they are likely to turn to the trade market to fill their starting rotation need.

Guess there is something they don't like about Stroman, or his asking price is too high.

some fronts. I think there's a pecking order to these things and right now the

pecking is on Max. Watch if they don't land him and then sign Stro' everyone's

The longer the Scherzer deal drags on without resolution, the more I feel he will be signing elsewhere. As the Mets spend all their time and energy trying to close with Max, the more they may see the other options (Stroman, Ray, & Rodon) disappearing from the market in this, race against the clock, signing frenzy.

Well all indication is the owners are going to mandate that they can't sign anyone else after Wednesday night, so might have to wait around regardless.



But they still desperately NEED Stroman, or someone of that caliber. Even if this Scherzer thing finalizes. They probably still need a Matz type AFTER that too.

Wow, while I was posting the above. The Scherzer deal is being announced as imminent by many sources. Though, MLB.com and ESPN have neither declared it a done deal ("finalizing") as of this moment.

Still need another starting pitcher, though. DeGrom/Scherzer, then a big dropoff to Walker/Carrasco/Megill or Peterson is not enough to get you through 162.

the next two pitchers out there are rodon and kershaw.



kershaw would be delightful if healthy, but i don't know how healthy he could be. is that the kind of move where, hey if it works, we kick ass, and if not, we're still got depth available in all the other guys we have? either way, between the work ethic and attitude, i feel like we'd have a hell of clubhouse.

I think they'll try to sign the best of whoever remains. And a trade isn't out of the question either. I doubt they'll trade prospects like Mauricio or Baty or Alvarez, but would be more inclined to trade from the big league roster, guys like Smith or McNeil or Davis.

Yusei Kikuchi appears to be on their radar. He's a LH SP, was good enough to make the AL All-Star team, and then faded enough to be left off the Mariners' playoff roster. I have some knowledge of him as he was on my fantasy team for a good part of last year (he faded enough that I cut him). He was indeed great and then, erratic, and then bad.
