SAndy could've just let it be with this tweet from Kevin an hour prior to his statement.

Well, Kevin got it right. Javy...didn't.

Sandy's statement.

In a post-game press conference today, Javy Baez stated that his “thumbs down” gesture during the game was a message to fans who recently have booed him and other players for poor performance. These comments, and any gestures by him or other players with a similar intent, are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Mets fans are understandably frustrated over the team's recent performance. The players and the organization are equally frustrated, but fans at Citi Field have every right to express their own disappointment. Booing is every fan's right.

The Mets will not tolerate any player gesture that is unprofessional in its meaning or is directed in a negative way toward our fans. I will be meeting with our players and staff to convey this message directly.

Mets fans are loyal, passionate, knowledgeable and more than willing to express themselves. We love them for every one of these qualities.

This is a really bad look all round. Jesus how lacking in self awareness can one bunch of people be.

The more I think about this, the more convinced I am that Baez should not play another inning in a Mets uniform. Pillar as well. DFA them, but not for a couple of days so that they lose their playoff eligibility.

Lindor, well, we've made too much of a commitment to him. He gets a couple of days off too, but after that give the fans every opportunity to let him have it.

DFA Baez. What an asshat.

Almost wish I was at Citi so I could boo these pricks.

I'm sure those there will have fun with this.

I guess I should listen to the context of those remarks to better understand them. I was on the road yesterday and missed most of the game. It would seem to be a kind of not so funny joke with a kernel of truth to it. I'll bet the players are unhappy. I also understand they didn't hire Baez for his brains. He's getting dfaed over this unless he doubles down

Sandy's message seems appropriate inasmuch as he recognized what red meat this would be for a press that hasn't had the kind of access to get anything so juicy in years and a narrative to explain the club's dysfunction.

Getting harder and harder to imagine Luis survives. The team might also do well to acquire a veteran or two who "know how to play the game the right way." The ballplayers haven't been held to account, and would seem to care more about what color the jersey is, or how they do in meaningless skills competitions than the long season.

This story has made me disproportionately angry. I never boo at the ballpark. But they're booing us, booing me.

Has any team ever hated its own fans as much as this one? Ever?

This sounds so (ahem) bearish.

You could almost here whomever was questioning gaffawing as he realised how stupid Baez was going to look coming out with that.

I don't like booing - I never see the point of it, but to whine about it and then do some stupid 'retribution' ... do you EVER look in the mirror!

Look I've supported the team for 50 years. I boo sometimes. I booed the other night when we went down feebly to a parade shitty giants pitchers & a guy didn't cover first base. It's reactive and it expresses my displeasure at the effort-- very different than the numbnuts who *greet* a player with boos. Those fans suck. I am a very good Mets fan.

it's entertainment, boo if you're not entertained. Although booing specific players always seems a little crass. Boo a GIDP down 3 runs in the 5th. But booing like Dom Smith when he walks up to the plate is silly, though I guess if you want to boo when he makes out AGAIN, that's you're right. Of course sometimes players misunderstand. You might boo Kevin Pillar in the starting lineup because Michael Conforto SHOULD be there. You're really booing Luis Rojas. I remember a story from Philly that Billy Wagner got upset that fans were booing a ball or something, and it just turned out they were booing that he only hit 99 and not 100. Booing the speed gun.

I imagine Báez thought he was trying to be cute or playful or something, like "thumbs down to booing!" but he certainly didn't phrase or say it like that. The other guys were just doing the same thing every team does, signaling when you get on base. Javy's like "hey, let's do this!" and they just played along. teammates, etc.

I'm kind of "eh" about this.

They're playing poorly and looking for a way to stay motivated, so they're using the negative vibes as fuel. That's fine. It's poorly thought out to turn that into a public campaign, but players can be stupid.

The whole churve thing was weird in that it was hitters referencing the grip of a pitcher. He was, in fact, their number five starter and they were making the reference long after he was hurt and unlikely to ever pitch for the Mets again. It also looked like a white power sign.

Players can be stupid.

It's not like I need a reason to dislike the Baez deal, but his contract is up at the end of the season, which is more than I can say for Robinson Canó. A good leader — whether that's Alderson or Scott or Rojas or Lindor — can make something out of this moment, and a bad leader not so much. We'll see.

I'll also add that I'm not sure I understand the advocacy for dumping Pillar.

Maybe Baez should put out a Jefferies-esque full page New York Times ad and

atone for some of his cluelessness both on and off the field.

You know things are not going well if you're booed at a charity event.

We shall see.

The outrage here is hilarious to me. If you want to boo (I don't get it personally, but ok), then boo. But if players have an innocuous response to it, who gives a shit if you approve of it or not. Booing is meant to elicit a response. You got one. And ironically, you don't like how it feels. I think it's kinda funny myself.

process but there will be plenty who will jump all over it.

You all have good points.

You just can't have players doing stupid shit like this.

Ultimately it is up to how the owner feels about it.
