Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 A nearly annual tradition in this era of the Wilpon Mets. Inevitably, each season goes from the thrill of hanging on each pitch on Opening Day, to the carefree, worry-free "what's the point of it all" realization that our Mets are not contenders and will not be in the pennant race.Has everyone hit that point yet?The 2019 Mets might be outplaying their 2018 counterparts. I'm not sure what exact game it was, but for me, I'm pretty sure "I Give Up Day 2018" took place in the midst of an 8 game losing streak from May 31 to June 9, that saw us get swept by the O's and lose the first two to the MFY's. Here, on June 18, we sit 34-38, 8.5 behind Atlanta. But only 5.5 games behind Philly for the second wild card (four teams in front of us). I don't think I'm quite at I Give Up Day 2019. I might be by the end of this series, but not quite yet. I do think, though, that the only way we get back into it is if the new ball disappears and our guys find their sliders.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I don't give up yet. I think I will if/when this road trip goes the way it looks it will. Really this series could damage us beyond hope. There's not post 7/31 Trade Deadline so the join-or-die activity is starting earlier. Of course the Mets are typically late actors.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I don't! It's probably just about time to trade Zack Wheeler and Todd Frazier. And Robinson Cano, of course, but that's not going to be possible.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I've watched a total of about three or four innings combined over the last week and a half. If I'm home during a game, I'll try to catch Alonso's at bats, but even then....Is that giving up? I dunno.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I need to keep up the appearance of hope until Friday when we have tickets to see Walker Lockett pitch at Wrigley. Then maybe we'll give up.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Alonso at Wrigley in a day game during a warm spell. I'd root for about seven homers bouncing around the streets of Chicago.Storms are expected, though.

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 The two losses last Thursday into Friday pushed me close to give-up status.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 i like to beat the rush and give up before the season starts. I'm rarely wrong in doing so.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Yeah, I'd say this team is meeting my pre-season expectations, so I'm not terribly disappointed. I'm down to one or two games a week and rarely the whole thing...especially when they are losing and/or look like losers.I don't know if it was "giving up", but I didn't consider this team would be a competitive one at jump street.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Whenever that day comes, it just got pushed back by one.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 I have the games on but not expecting much from a .500 team.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2019 Author Posted June 26, 2019 There yet? It's funny. I was out last night and saw the Mets were up. Next time I checked I saw they had coughed it up again. Barely had a reaction. But, I wake up, and check the standings and see that we are still only 4.5 back of the Wild Card. So, I don't know.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 I haven't given up, 4.5 back in the WC means a hot week and they're right there. But, man, this bullpen, I'm getting pretty jaded about the late innings. I don't know that it's fixable with these particular guys. They all suck.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Yeah the lackluster NL is the only hope. I probably said this above but what drives me nuts is that this club is getting unbelievable performances from 2 guys and generally puts points on the board every night. It's the failure to turn that into any kind of momentum that makes you wanna give up.Watch we'll get some reliable bullpen work and Alonso will suffer his first MLB slump.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Today. right around the 9th inning.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2019 Author Posted June 27, 2019 Move over. Can you get the bartender's attention?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2019 Posted July 5, 2019 I'm down to the caveat that anything is possible, stranger things have happened, yada cubed. Tonight, Game 88 — another deGrom outing wasted, another bullpen implosion, the blown call at the plate that couldn't be reviewed because Mickey used his challenge on a Quixotic quest five innings earlier — sealed 99.99% what I've been no less than ~98% certain of since early May. The last two percent are always the toughest to admit.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 5, 2019 Posted July 5, 2019 It's a perfect storm, when your team has three wonderful all-stars having wonderful all-star seasons, and you have a game where all three are contributors, but the rest of the roster is performing like such dead weight, that they can't carry them across the line.I think I mixed three or four analogies and metaphors there. Fuck.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2019 Posted July 6, 2019 It's hurtful to me but I generally hang around at least until the NFL training camp season starts and I can think about what a shit show the Jets might be this year. Hashtag Eff Emm Ell
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2019 Posted July 6, 2019 I rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1962 Mets.I never give up.Not my style. But, man, these guys are making it tough.Later
