I've taken some time to think through my thoughts because I had a hard time resolving the conflicting feelings I was having on this. I think I'm comfortable with my feelings on this now. I don't like that Tim Anderson compared himself to Jackie Robinson. In a way, I think this is somewhat tone deaf. Anderson, nor anyone living today, can truly appreciate what Jackie went through. And when he makes that comparison, I think he minimizes the abuse Jackie suffered, and the measures society has taken to address it. We are far from perfect now, but if you discount all of that progress and compare Tim Anderson's situation to Jackie Robinson, you undermine the motivation to get better. That being said, Donaldson is wrong. Tim Anderson is allowed to compare himself to Jackie Robinson, the man, not Jackie Robinson the player. When Tim says "I feel like the modern day Jackie Robinson", he's saying I feel the impact of modern day racism, and it's a burden he has to shoulder every day. Donaldson, a white man, mocking that statement is minimizing or making light of that struggle. His message is "Everything is fine, don't be a whiny bitch about perceived racism. No one's burning crosses anymore". And this is unequivocally wrong. And everyone chanting "Jackie" at Yankee Stadium is a piece of shit.
