Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 For Doc and Darryl, next year.(Gwreck take: this is not needed).
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Well, needed or not, they're a zillion times more deserving than Gary Carter. That's for sure.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I wouldn't have made this decision, but whatever.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 FWIW, when Segna took to his socials to field options for his Met number, he said #48 was off the table.I'd imagine it was taken by fans at the time to be Segna being aware and/or being appreciative of deGrom's legacy with the franchise/MLB more than anything. But, it hasn't been issued yet this season 🤔Certainly a sign that #48 probably is in line for a retirement ceremony down the road.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I'm OK with this! I have to figure Wright's number will go up there, too, at some point.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Cohen likes to retire numbers!
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Author Posted August 24, 2023 Retiring so many numbers dilutes the significance. The Mets' Hall of Fame is for Doc and Darryl and Koosman.Retired numbers should be strictly limited to individuals who make the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Met. You could maybe make an exception for a beloved player who played an entire career with the team.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I kinda liked the fact that the Mets had retired so few numbers, that's changing
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Cleon Jones and Jerry Grote deserve consideration This would be an easier call if Gooden and Strawberry had kept their shite together off the field

Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Wright, Kranepool, Carter, Beltran, and a Payson sign similar to the Shea sign. Keep 48 in mothballs, at least for now.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 And 1 for Mookie, while we're at it.Not that I think any Mets numbers should be retired other than 14, 24, 31, 37, and 41. 24 because Willie Mays is Willie Mays even if he wasn't much of a Met. Maybe 17 because it's about sentimentality and Keith gets extra love because of his time in the booth. And perhaps 5. Who didn't love Tsuyoshi Shinjo? And, sure, 42 deserves the MLB-wide retirement.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Now batting for your 2032 New York Mets,number @ ...
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I see no need to do this. Gooden screwed the Mets repeatedly by wasting his talent on a variety of recreational drugs. Strawberry left for more money.Straw has at least turned his life around. Gooden is still figuring it out, which is not a good look at 58.Who's next? Al Leiter? I'd rather have the numbers in rotation.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 How about Tim Foli, Bruce Boisclair, Junior Ortiz, and Dwight Bernard while we're at it? I always appreciated the restraint the Mets showed when it came to retiring numbers. That's obviously gone out the window, but I'm sixty years old and beyond caring too much about such things.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 It was fair game after Hernandez but neither Darryl nor Doc had the kind of career that should end in number retirement.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 For Lute Barnes, I assume?I'd suggest retiring 19 for Brian Ostrosser, but I've never heard of him.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 *chortle* *chortle* You guys quack me.Almost 6000 PA over 18 seasons or so with just one team?

nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Hernandez has to get credit for his time in the booth, I'm fine with that number retirement.Strawberry spent 8 years as a Met as one of the best players in MLB. At the end of the day, though, David Wright had a better Mets career. The only reason to say "Strawberry before Wright", in my mind, is that Wright is still a VERY recent retirement - they could retire him in 10 years and still have all the fans who grew up with him show up.Gooden, on the other hand, had a good rookie years and a season for the ages in 1985. Then he was pretty average for 9 years. i'm not sure he should be retired, even with lower standards. There seems to be some support for other unretired Mets from the 60's and 80's like Cleon Jones, Ed Kranepool, Mookie Wilson, etc - but to me none of these guys should be next on any list. David Wright should be. But after that, for me, its EDGARDO ALFONZO!
