G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Robinson Cano has been designated for assignment.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Yay!Big nads on Steve for that one
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I'm delighted the Mets had the guts to do it. One more advantage of having Steve Cohen as owner.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 The Wilpons would have doubled down and signed him to an extension.I think Robbie is a good dude. I wish him the best in his retirement.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Looks like the Red Sox are also eating a giant commitment to Pedro Sandoval.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 They should both sign with the Ducks.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 McNeil: Too bad. But hey, I guess that means more playing time for me. At second certainly.Smith: And that means more time in left for me. Sucks though.Davis: And hopefully I'll see more time at DH. It's a shame it comes at somebody else's expense, though.Guillorme: Shit! There goes my defensive replacement gig!McNeil: I don't think you're looking at this the right way.Guillorme: Waddaya mean?! You're all pretending to be sad and I'm the only sincere one here! Shit! Shit! SHIT!
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Puma had a story about Lindor saying he "wouldn't be happy" if Cano got cut. But, really, what is Lindor supposed to say when he get a question like that?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Mets management is making intelligent (baseball-based) decisions for a change.Later
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Where do those of us who pitched a fit at signing a Yankees castoff in the first place go to gloat and scream "I told yuz so!"? Asking for myself.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Where do those of us who pitched a fit at signing a Yankees castoff in the first place go to gloat and scream "I told yuz so!"? Asking for myself. They didn't sign him.The Mets fans screamed because they traded "can't miss" prospect Jared Kelenic for him.But those screams have so far just been snickers, because Kelenic has hit .175 in over 400 major league at-bats since the trade.Later
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 They go right here, I think.Of course you cut Cano. Nobody ever thought he was worth the money; eating the bad contract was a requirement to get Diaz and his ridiculously good contract. And putting aside the question as to whether a player who was twice busted for cheating is the person you want in the "good clubhouse guy" role, the fact that his prior OK-ness was likely steroid-fueled means his days of being better than replacement value are probably long gone.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Well, this definitely shows how much things have changed with the current Cohen ownership era vs. the Wilpon era Mets. No way in hell, the Wilpons would have ate that salary. They almost assuredly would have optioned Guillorme or Davis, or possibly released Jankowski outright. It's great to have an ownership that makes decisions based on actual baseball considerations rather than financial ones.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Man, what a breath of fresh air this new administration is. I almost wish there was an easy way to make him the most expensive assistant batting / bench coach in history.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Does the $20 million now come off the books for the Mets' CBT?
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Nice to see Steve Cohen has told the Mets its ok to have 'sunk costs'. While I would have held out a bit longer (based on past results, not salary) this is till a good sign for how the Mets are going to run.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Brodie Van Wagenen is Cano's agent. Is he the agent of any other current Mets, or is the BVW era finally over?Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 He's an ex-agent, so not currently an agent of anyone.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I thought they would drag things on for another month but it's probablybest they didn't puss-foot around and wait. He'll hook up with someone, hopefully way way out west...bbrdotcom has Robbie's agent history as: Agents: Roc Nation Sports • Previously: Scott Boras, Bobby Barad, Joe Rosario, Peter Vescovo
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I really don't think this is about BVW, other than that the original acquisition happened under his watch.I really don't think this is about the Wilpons, other than that the original acquisition happened under their watch.A roster trim had to be made, and they determined this was the least costly. If baseball was played the right way, he might have some utility as a pinch-hitter. Maybe. But that ain't how it is. He and the Panda have to now consider whether it's worth it to catch on and try to be some hurting team's DH.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I didn't say it was about BVW, I was pointing out that a generally accurate sitewith tons of such data doesn't list him as a current or former agent. And of course it's not about the Wilpons.Sorry for jumping in...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 No, of course you didn't. That was suggested above.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 BVW was his agent at one point, back when that huge FA deal with Seattle was struck. But Cano & he split some time after that and, of course, Brodie was no longer an agent at all at the time of the trade or since his GM stint ended. So, yeah, Cano's DFA'ing (or anyone else's for that matter) has nothing to do with BVW or his time here.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Roc Nation cut that deal for him. He was their first big client, and them seemingly plucking that deal out of the ether, when it seemed like nobody would be competing with the Yankees, went a long way toward establishing their legitimacy.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I didn't think they'd do it, but holy hell this was the right move. Nice to have an owner who can eat $40 million like it was tip money.Things are a lot more rational now in the lineup and DH rotation. This team just got better.
