Am I the only one who enjoys keeping score at games?

I've been to three games in Florida this week, and two of the parks did not sell programs and scorecards.

I almost felt a little lost. I like keeping track of who is in the game and what they are doing. I know it's all available online, but it's a fun thing to do. For instance, I had to wait until after the game to learn St. Lucie walked 15 batters in the game. I knew they had a bunch, but it's fun to keep track of that as it's happening.

I asked staff at both ballparks where the programs were being sold. Most acted as if I was the first to ask. One in each park said they stopped selling them due to COVID. Not sure why programs spread COVID and caps don't.

Maybe scorecards are one of those things never to come back, like media in the clubhouses.

Hmm. I had Piazza reaching on an error in the 8th as opposed to yours. I must have written mine down before the official scorer's decision and I didn't have an eraser.

Retrosheet has it as a single and Piazza advancing to second on an error by Furcal.

My software has it as Piazza reaching second base on a single. The error isn't specified. It's how the retrosheet data was interpreted by the program. It's not perfect. (I still have to motivate myself to make the changes necessary to account for the "automatic runner". It's why there are no 2020 scorecards posted yet.)

I stopped keeping score when I started going to games with my kids, but maybe I'll start again now that they're older.

Knowing how to keep score is also a useful skill at youth baseball. I'm the dad who has been roped in to score the game on numerous occassions.

I used to get through the first 5-6 innings and then stop. Once I'm two beers in and the lineup changes start happening I lose interest.

Keeping score is a beautiful thing and it's something pass along to your children. One aspect that you can't replicate with a scorekeeping app is that you can do it in a way that makes sense to you. There's no "wrong answer". If you want to write "S" for single, fine. If you want to make one dash, fine.

You score orgies?

I think "score" has a different meaning when you're at an orgy.

I used to keep score but I couldn't keep it up either. (the enthusiasm!)

I have crappy hand-writing, I never went back to look at them, they don't really show me anything the zillion of online PBP don't show me.

I saw some one mention the official scorer, why? Your scorecard isn't "official" score it how you think it should be scored!

"That's an E-3 if you're scoring at home, and if you are... your loneliness saddens me."

Used to, especially as a kid/young adult. But as I started attending in mixed company-- some non-fans, some folks who wanted to walk concourses-- I started doing it less and less. This was mostly due to a psychological quirk-- if I couldn't score the game in its entirety, uninterrupted, I wouldn't want to start. (Call it lazy perfectionism.)

One of the downsides of modern technology is that in the old days if you kept score you could be the most popular person in your row. "What did this guy do last time he was up?" Nowadays a lot of that information is put on the message boards in the park or can be accessed through an app.

Long ago I had a lawyer buddy who intricately scores baseball games. He doesn't use a form, just a page of notebook paper, and can keep up a running conversation all the while and not miss beat. He even charts the pitches. That's too intimidating for a person like me who keeps forgetting if it's the LF who is 9 or the RF who is 9. Plus, I just like to watch. Don't particularly even like to talk while the game is going on. Be sure I have a libation in hand and don't even think of standing in front of me if you value your life.
