Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Am I the only one who enjoys keeping score at games?I've been to three games in Florida this week, and two of the parks did not sell programs and scorecards.I almost felt a little lost. I like keeping track of who is in the game and what they are doing. I know it's all available online, but it's a fun thing to do. For instance, I had to wait until after the game to learn St. Lucie walked 15 batters in the game. I knew they had a bunch, but it's fun to keep track of that as it's happening. I asked staff at both ballparks where the programs were being sold. Most acted as if I was the first to ask. One in each park said they stopped selling them due to COVID. Not sure why programs spread COVID and caps don't. Maybe scorecards are one of those things never to come back, like media in the clubhouses.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I used to, but gave up on it many years ago.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I've scored most Mets games I've been to. Here's one of my favorites from back in the day. Man, I got old somehow.https://imgur.com/XZgIMVM.jpg>https://imgur.com/9NjMOyj.jpg>
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I haven't scored a game in like four years, but when I did I used a clipboard and files from here: http://baseballscorecard.com/http://baseballscorecard.com/
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Tuesday night Mets club keeps score but I stopped doing it myself once I officially outsourced my memory to Google

Methead Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Hmm. I had Piazza reaching on an error in the 8th as opposed to yours. I must have written mine down before the official scorer's decision and I didn't have an eraser.Retrosheet has it as a single and Piazza advancing to second on an error by Furcal.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 My software has it as Piazza reaching second base on a single. The error isn't specified. It's how the retrosheet data was interpreted by the program. It's not perfect. (I still have to motivate myself to make the changes necessary to account for the "automatic runner". It's why there are no 2020 scorecards posted yet.)
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Makes sense that it would be interpreted that way.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I used to keep score but it made it hard to jump up and cheer.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I stopped keeping score when I started going to games with my kids, but maybe I'll start again now that they're older. Knowing how to keep score is also a useful skill at youth baseball. I'm the dad who has been roped in to score the game on numerous occassions.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I keep score of all the Cheetos games, what I need is the Ultimate Cheetos Database
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I used to get through the first 5-6 innings and then stop. Once I'm two beers in and the lineup changes start happening I lose interest.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Keeping score is a beautiful thing and it's something pass along to your children. One aspect that you can't replicate with a scorekeeping app is that you can do it in a way that makes sense to you. There's no "wrong answer". If you want to write "S" for single, fine. If you want to make one dash, fine.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Or, as some announcer used to say: 'That's 6-4-3 if you're scoring at home ... or even if you're alone'
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 I score at the game too, every time. I even made my own Excel file and print and get it spiral-bound at Staples to fit my needs.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 I used to get through the first 5-6 innings and then stop. Once I'm two beers in and the lineup changes start happening I lose interest.I used to keep score but I couldn't keep it up either. (the enthusiasm!)I have crappy hand-writing, I never went back to look at them, they don't really show me anything the zillion of online PBP don't show me. I saw some one mention the official scorer, why? Your scorecard isn't "official" score it how you think it should be scored!
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 "That's an E-3 if you're scoring at home, and if you are... your loneliness saddens me."-Vin Scully-type announcer on The SimpsonsUsed to, especially as a kid/young adult. But as I started attending in mixed company-- some non-fans, some folks who wanted to walk concourses-- I started doing it less and less. This was mostly due to a psychological quirk-- if I couldn't score the game in its entirety, uninterrupted, I wouldn't want to start. (Call it lazy perfectionism.)

Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 One of the downsides of modern technology is that in the old days if you kept score you could be the most popular person in your row. "What did this guy do last time he was up?" Nowadays a lot of that information is put on the message boards in the park or can be accessed through an app.
Double Switch Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 Long ago I had a lawyer buddy who intricately scores baseball games. He doesn't use a form, just a page of notebook paper, and can keep up a running conversation all the while and not miss beat. He even charts the pitches. That's too intimidating for a person like me who keeps forgetting if it's the LF who is 9 or the RF who is 9. Plus, I just like to watch. Don't particularly even like to talk while the game is going on. Be sure I have a libation in hand and don't even think of standing in front of me if you value your life.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Yes, I get very quiet during games; I like to focus on the action. I'm only fun to be with between innings.Beer in hand? Mandatory.
