G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 From the Times: But according to a person with direct knowledge of the investigation who requested anonymity to discuss details that had not been made public, Beltran was named because he was a central figure at the outset of the operation, in which electronic equipment was used illegally to steal the opposing catchers' signs.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/15/sports/baseball/carlos-beltran-astros-cheating-scandal.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/15/sports/baseball/carlos-beltran-astros-cheating-scandal.html
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Mets are “wavering” on whether they should stick by Beltran in the wake of these scandals. Olney broke the news on Sportscenter on Wednesday.https://wfan.radio.com/articles/news/mets-reportedly-wavering-on-keeping-carlos-beltranhttps://wfan.radio.com/articles/news/mets-reportedly-wavering-on-keeping-carlos-beltran
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 A video also surfaced this morning of Joey Cora remarking how Beltran was the MFYs most valuable acquisition (wink!) after they racked up dozens of runs over two games during the London series.https://twitter.com/CLoprestiWFAN/status/1217430561079418882
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I was honestly looking forward to having him manage the team, but the more I think about it, the more I fall on the side of letting him go. There are just too many questions.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 He's in danger of being Wally Backmanned.So... if he gets fired before the season starts, does he retain his position as the 22nd Mets manager, with the new guy being number 23, or is it like it never happened, and the new guy will be 22? I know someone who maintains a Mets database, and he may have to make some kind of determination regarding how to record this.
cal sharpie Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I would say that it never happened. Just as someone who manages one game gets to be called a manager even if he is an interim, I think someone who manages no games doesn't get to be called one.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I'd say at least one pitch has to be thrown or it never happened.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 Building a rationale...

Backman isn't listed as a Diamondback skipper.Hell, Bill Belichek is never called a “former HC of the NYJ” or listed among Jet Head Coaches despite his infamous resignation note and press conference!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 It does make sense to refer to Wally Backman and Arizona as a precedent.Thanks.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Journalism in 2020: NJ.com is quoting someone who claims to be Beltran's niece tweeting that he is resigning as Mets manager.https://www.nj.com/mets/2020/01/mlb-rumors-mets-carlos-beltran-stepping-down-as-manager-due-to-astros-cheating-scandal.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/mets/2020/01/mlb-rumors-mets-carlos-beltran-stepping-down-as-manager-due-to-astros-cheating-scandal.html
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 (edited) I don't anyone thinks it's journalism, they're simply reporting stuff that was tweeted.Your prez's tweets are reported on hourly many day, no one thinks that's journalismeither. Edited January 15, 2020 by Guest
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 It's re-tweeting not using Twitter.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 If he does resign, I would hope that at least one of the tabloids would have a headline of VANISH TAKEE!
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I know this is a dumb question, but I was away from the news for a while. What exactly were the electronic tools the Astros used to steal signs?
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 If the Mets fire him, I'm going to be interested to see if they also release JD Davis. And if not, an explanation as to why there is different treatment for the 2017 teammates.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 As a big fan of the Jets' Bill Belichick era, I'm not down with the pretend-it-never-happened strategy. Beltran got to do stuff. He got to use the parking space and cards printed and help recruit Brian Schneider and Dellin Betances and stuff. Tim Tebow spent the whole offseason trying to re-work his whole marketing strategy without the number 15.Hensley Muelens became the Mets bench coach and Eduardo Perez had to take the offer from TCBY, while Tim Bogar bought up tickets to follow the big Third Eye Blind tour through the spring into the summer. These things happened, man. They did.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I mean, he's an asterisk. Hired-but-never-managed. Anyway, more importantly, if Beltran is out... who's likely in? Luis Rojas? Tony DeFrancesco? Mike Bell?

LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Think Eddy Perez would take El Esta Aqui's sloppy seconds?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I think he would but won't get the offer. I think Fred goes all in on Terry. Loves old white guys and more suspicious than ever of everyone else.

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Yeah, over my head and rolling to the wall...
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 it's a play on words of an inside joke of a misunderstanding of spanish lyrics (Beltran's walk-up music, El Esta Aqui) from 15 years ago.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 I feel like we explain this on here to someone, like, once every 9-12 months. #bulletproofcoffee #gingkobilobaAnyway... figures that we'd take the slow boat to an announcement, with copious leaks and low-level/anonymous employees leaking their opinions to the media. Verrry on-brand, as the young'uns say. Now, if they let him go, it looks all the more as if they got bullied into this. If they stand behind him, it looks mealy-mouthed rather than strong, no matter what's said. In concerning themselves first and foremost with public opinion, they fuck themselves in the court of public opinion.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 My Beltran watch says that it's 15:15 on the dot.
