luckily he has assistants and is entitled to not work 24/7.

Disagree, Steve. I think there's value in maintaining a positive relationship with fans.

Who doesn't want to be a populist exec? Fist-bumping the customers? Wearing jeans to work? Coming up with corny nicknames for your leadership-level staff? Misquoting Talking Heads in your office-wide e-mails? That guy has it made. He probably uses a scooter in the office.

I mean, #MeToo is barrelling at him like a runaway train, but until it arrives, his life is sweet.

Hanging with the public is easy when things are going well.

To shy away and/or back out on a previous commitment because the team is in a slump, on the other hand, looks particularly bad.

Honestly, I think people giving out about this are insane.

From the 7line perspective....

The GM of the team 'takes a seat with them' and they treat him with respect and civility. I think that's the least I'd expect them to do. I don't know how they talked, but I don't think you would expect to get into a serious discussion at a ball park when a game is on. I'm sure BVW is acutely aware of the disappointment that Cano & Diaz have been and wishes he could reverse the trade and doesn't need people shouting at him at a game to analyse this.

Brodie Van Wagenen perspective

I don't get the "he should be doing something else" or "he should be ashamed of his actions"

Hiding away when things go wrong is easy, showing up takes guts. It's also important to take the temperature of your 'fans', people like the 7line saying "hey we're ok with you trading assets to get better for 2020/21" or "we really don't think you should move anyone as if you do attendance will plummet" would be legitimate, interesting and important things for him to here as they have a direct impact on the team, certainly more impact then seeing the statcast data on launch angles a few hours earlier (or whatever other reports he may have been due to receive in that time). I'm not saying that what fans think should be an over-riding decision making element, but it's a factor you need to weigh up, and figuring out what it would require to get buy in on a decision is not something to be ignored.

Finally - about the 7line - I've never been to a game with them (haven't been in NYC since June 2001!) but the one thing I think is amazing is that they've finally got the 'away fan' culture going a bit. One of the brilliant things about football is the way that there's fans who travel to matches all round the country/world to follow their team. It's what makes the atmosphere - it also allows things like this ...

[to explain - Emmanuel Adebayor had left Arsenal for Man City - Arsenal fans believed it was to get more money, Adebayor says that Arsenal accepted the bid for him and he didn't precipitate it. When Arsenal travelled to play City at the start of the season their fans gave him all sorts of grief - then he scored.... ]

Your point stands.

The only problem I have with BVW taking in a game with the 7-Line Army is that it wasn't with The Crane Pool Army.

We had some cool shirts going here back in the day. We had some great concepts, but didn't put as much time into the artwork and development and didn't effectively monetize it, and the 7-Line did. I think we push more interesting perspectives here, but they grew from hard work while we shrunk. Fair fucks to them.

A former member of the Pool infiltrated the 7 Line and met BVW and posted a photo. So we were kind of representing.

I miss having MetFairy here.

Fair, but my point wasn't that he kept a promise/commitment, it was the venue that the commitment was in. Would it have been better served being in a section closer to his suite if he had to be called away for an urgent call or something that couldn't wait until the morning?

I'd probably say that would have been a better look than the section behind center. Though now that I think of it, aren't the actual offices right there, which would be more appropriate to go to for conducting business than the suite I guess.

I think it was more the overt spectacle of it that makes it cringe worthy than if it was somewhere else in the park, or like at a bar/restaurant party setting.

OMG. He took in a game with some fans. Nothing ugly happened, and a seemingly good time was had by all. This is a good thing. This team has been tone deaf for too long, and anytime upper management reaches out to the fans is a good thing.

Yep there it is. I'm not in "the Army" but I'm all about engaged fans and management who wants to be a part of the fan experience. There's nothing negative here except people's personal spin on the current/historical fortunes of the team, IMHO.

Put me down for what the last three posters are talking about, which is what I was gonna write as soon as I read rogers' post. Oh my God! Call the FBI! BVW hung out with some fans in the stands. If BVW gets away with this, next thing you know, BVW might have his wife over for a lunch break. And if that happens, his kids might wanna come over to take in a game and some Shake Shack burgers. Then what? Woe is me.

Pete McCarthy, much-missed radio pregame host, said on the Metrospective podcast that he sat with T7L on Tuesday night and there was no “Brodie, Brodie” chant. At most, a couple of fans called out to him.

It's almost as if what the Post reports needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Pete was just reporting what he saw and neither endorsed nor condemned the reaction to Van Wagenen, whatever it was.
