  3. If I were by myself, I would probably try to push through headache and push through nausea and maybe get some kind of altitude pulmonary enema and croak As unpleasant as a pulmonary enema would be, it's the edema that kills you. I've got friends who've hiked Kilimanjaro who are fifteen years older than R.A. and who aren't professional athletes (OK, knuckleball pitchers aren't exactly athletes, either). According to them, it's really no big deal.

  5. That catfight he had with Jerry early in - I think - the 08 season. Jerry yanked him for loafing, and then referred to him as "she" in the press. I think that was when I stopped caring that much if either of them stayed Metly. Had a godawful September 2007 at bat and in the field. It's usually referred to as a team collapse, but mostly it was the pitching and Reyes. Beltran and Wright were spectacular, Alou had his 30 game hitting streak, and the other position players played as expected. I still enjoyed watching him play, and I don't hold it against him for going with the highest bidder.

  7. Rotoworld, quoting someone from the Palm Beach Post wrote: Jose Reyes and the Marlins have not agreed to contact terms, according to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post.Capozzi cited a Marlins team source. Dino Costa of SiriusXM reported Sunday evening that Reyes had agreed to terms with the Marlins and Jorge Sedano of 790 AM The Ticket in Miami followed with a report that a deal was almost completed. But Capozzi is a far more reliable source. We'd expect Reyes to visit more teams before agreeing to a contract. Sounds like the news is that the Marlins think Jose is a good shortstop and would really like to have him on their team.

I think the official dictionary goes up to eight letters and then says "go ahead and use Webster's", or something to that effect. 10. The Karate Kid was on last night, so I watched that instead. Same basic plot, but Pat Morita was even cooler than Jim Leyland.
  11. It's a team game - individual records are interesting only when they're earned in the course of playing the game in a way that helps the team win. Reyes pulling out after the bunt single was cheap because there was no strategic reason to quit - if his hamstring was acting up, he could have sat out the game. Or he could have announced before the game started that he was going to come to bat once and call it a season, whether he got a hit or not. But it sure looks like Reyes' main goal was to inflate his average. Yeah, it's been done plenty of times before. And, sure, the Mets in general are easy targets and get far more abuse than they deserve, and way too much has been made out of this by the media. It still sucked.
  12. I didn't actually see this - was at my GFs apartment and following on Gameday because she doesn't get SNY - but Jason Bay breaking the no-grand-slam streak in the 14-3 Tigers game is the 2011 Metly moment that sticks in my mind.

I remember it as just a chance to have him finish the season with an appearance at home so he could get a nice hand from the fans.
  14. A friend of mine has an extra ticket somewhere in the Promenade Club on the first base side, so I'm on my way.
  15. But as nobody really has shown much interest in participating except to comment on how they wouldn't have included what I included, feh. Whoa....deep cleansing breaths. It's a fine idea. We're just in lazy late-season mode here. Phoenix's own Andre Ethier is the best of a weakish lot. 17. First Met from There: Cleon Jones (Plateau, 1963). I was thinking Vinegar Bend Mizell (R-NC). BBRef has him as born in Leakesville, Mississippi, but Wikipedia says Vinegar Bend, Alabama. The Times obit goes with Leakesville.
  18. Carlos Zambrano probably hits better than Bay at this point. Bay's OPS as a Met: .697 Zambrano's OPS, same period: .682.

  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Nuthin' else to say but, WOW! The kind of game where you figure your PotG voting by asking; 'OK, who gets the other 4 points?' And except for Pagan running to 2nd when he shouldn't have, or Pagan forgetting the number of outs at one point (not a factor as it turned out) it was virtually a perfect game all around. Couple of two-out hits, two nice plays by Turner, and a whole lotta Cappy. Good to know Capuano can do more than pinch run. Howie seemed to think that Pagan's attempt to get to second was the right move - it was just luck and perfect Brave execution after the wild throw that got him.

  22. I'll go for weird here. Izzy?
  23. batmagadanleadoff wrote: For sure. He'll be the one to run straight through a fence to catch a ball. The catch'll cost him his life. Didn't I see this in a a baseball movie? But I hope that the Mets find a way to keep him around. I love that guy. M2dR36mTkyo Not quite through the fence, but close enough.
  24. The ace of an NL East team's pitching staff, who is coming off surgery and hasn't pitched an inning in 2011, is looking good in simulated games and may be coming back in September. Hint - his uni number ends in 7. http://aol.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2011-07-30/nationals-strasburg-getting-closer-to-rehab-assignment
  25. So, let me get this straight. Pittsburgh is five games ahead of Cincinnati, but Cincinnati is more likely to win the wild card. Arizona is only 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta and has no other team to catch, but has a less than 1-in-20 chance of winning the wild card. I'm sure the calculations consider things like schedule, player quality, run differentials, etc., etc., etc. in addition to the win-loss record. And, of course, they should. But it's going to take some convincing to make me believe there isn't a healthy dose of bullshit included in their math as well. OE - some of the Arizona story is probably that if they catch the Braves, they've got a good chance of catching the Giants and making the playoffs as a division winner. But that doesn't explain the Pittsburgh/Cincinnati difference.
