  1. Jarrod Saltalamacchia sucks a little less than Arencibia, but a lot more than Napoli. As much as Thole sucks, I'm not sure he sucks much more than any of the non-Napoli or Pierzynski people on that list. If the going rate for Arencibia is Niese, I'd rather suffer through another season of Thole/Nickeas or Recker.
  2. I have no clue what to do about Dickey. But before him, no pitcher in the history of the game had ever achieved his first ever 150+ IP, sub-3 ERA season at the age of 35. So the case can be made that history doesn't apply here.
  3. I shrug at this move. We're still paying him; doesn't make much difference if it's done today or spread out over years. Edgy DC wrote: There's also --- and this is quite speculative --- maybe a cautionary tale about entering the market with one foot. Omar set his sights from the beginning on the second-best slugging outfielder that offseason, perhaps hoping there'd be a less aggressive market for him and the Mets could get 85% of the production at 70% of the financial commitment. The Holliday/Bay Case (and wouldn't we all like to visit Holliday Bay?) might be cited in suggesting to a future GM that if you're going to be a bear, be a great big bad-ass bear. Maybe one with wings and gills to breathe under water. I'm fine with the idea of paying 70% less for a player who gives you 85% of the production of the best player at a given position, and I wouldn't say that the Bay contract proves that to be an impossible dream. The problem was that Bay gave us 0% of the production of Holliday.

  5. Can't get to Westfield this evening. Damn. My streak of days where I have not actually met a real live Met is at 17,490 and counting.
  6. Not that there weren't enough reasons to look forward to the annual demise of the MFY's before, but this gives me another. Brilliant. On the downside, it'll be many, many years before we have reason to repost LWFS's equally brilliant post about riding the 6 train on the day of the Yankees' victory parade.
  7. Piazza with the .600 slugging percentage, McReynolds with the doubles?
  8. The Second Spitter wrote: Cool. Get your 51's glow-in-the-dark baseball now. The "LV" logo is shit, but the "Alien Head" is the shit It took a while, but I just made the connection between the team name, the alien logo, and Area 51.
  9. Catching the end of TMF and D-Dad's pre-game tailgate on Opening Day. After that, it was all pretty much downhill.
  10. I don't get the Pelfrey hate. In 2012, he pitched one decent game and two great games. Then he got hurt. Why all the Fs?
  11. Tough week to be Ed Kranepool. A friend of mine watching the Nats game told me Bryce Harper just broke his record for most XBH by a teenager.
  12. Among teams currently in the division/WC lead, Kershaw has faced: Giants - 4 Cardinals - 2 Nats -1 Reds - 1 White Sox - 1 Total - 9 Dickey: Nats - 4 Braves - 3 Cardinals - 2 Reds - 2 O's - 1 MFYs -1 Total - 13 Story is similar if you look at teams with better than a .500 record. Dickey has had a more difficult schedule than Kershaw this year.
  13. Posted from halftime at the footy for Bulldog mojo. Haven't won two IGTs in a row since 2009. ProgreSs Score: bulldogs 16, rabbitohs 8. Final: Canterbury Bulldogs 32, South Sydney Rabbitohs 8. An all around good day for The Second Spitter.
