And away we go! You know you're being showcased, right? Brewerfan.net is going all in, and they need a veteran perv.
  2. OF the remaining ex-Mets, the higher one had a long career but only a brief one in Queens Larry Bowa?
  3. Nobody knows extreme heat as well as those who play their home games in St. Louis.
  4. I went with 3. If I'm much further back than that, I don't want to pin my hopes on "well, if the Braves start losing and the Diamondbacks get sunstroke and Prince Fielder gets traded to the Padres and Tony LaRussa starts batting his pitchers leadoff, then maybe we can sneak in to the wild card and get whupped by the Giants in the first round". I'd rather trade today's chips and have the best team in the league two or three years from now. In old pool parlance, I think that makes me a non-TITTS man. I'm more of a LEGGY (Let 'Em Go, Get Younger) kind of guy. I'm curious, Edgy. Why 1.75 as the exponent? There are a lot of other variables here - do I anticipate my team (or other teams) strengthening later in the year because of players coming back from injury? Do I anticipate my team weakening because some guys are playing over their heads? How much am I getting for my tradeable chips? Etc. Etc. Etc.
  5. WE get Berkman and YOU get Bartman HA! (There is only one letter difference in those two names) #stlcards I'm dying here. This is a parody, right?
  6. Collins cited Isringhausen's success before the All-Star Break and the raucous atmosphere against the Phillies as reasons why hed choose to go with the veteran on Friday night over Pedro Beato and Bobby Parnell, the other two candidates in the Mets' closer-by-committee crew. Why would raucosity matter? The thought is to go with the vet because he'll be better equipped to deal with loud noises? He's old, so his hearing isn't so good anymore?
  7. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I wasn't denigrating his postseason work; I meant November. (As in, "He's inferior to most 'pennant-run' rentals as a commodity-- thanks to Omar and the no-arb clause-- because he's ONLY worth what he gives you on-field right now.") I'm not going to call Omar or any of the other schmucks in Met management to task for this one. The sides negotiated, they agreed on $17M per year for seven years plus a no-arb clause, Beltran got rich, and we got the best CF of the decade. I'd make this deal again, even with the no-arb clause at the end.
  8. The Indians aren't limiting themselves to small-budget options Northeastern Ohio is beautiful this time of year. And the Indians are in a serious fight for the AL Central even without their starting RF, who is out for the season with a thumb injury. They've got 2B Jason Kipnis to give in return for Beltran. My Indians fan buddy says we can't have him. But, fortunately, he's not the Indians' GM.
  9. Wait...you can't lift more by making monster noises???? I remember Wagner coming up with that same eighth-inning excuse during a stretch when he blew a four-out save or two.
  10. metsguyinmichigan wrote: You had me until the last quote. Bastard. My deleted post was a comment on how the real articles are starting to sound even more outrageous than the CPF parodies. Then I took a breath, googled, found nothing, and figured that seawolf's post probably was a CPF parody. And a brilliant one, at that.
  11. That's the Dykstra that's not related to Lenny, right?
  12. Quiet in here tonight. Of the first 45 minutes of this Mets vs. Giants game, 30 have been spent discussing how Jeter would make the All-Star game better.
  13. Roberto Clemente trotted out to his usual spot in right field at Forbes Field to a standing ovation. Good article, but the Pirates were at Three Rivers by the time Clemente got his 3000th hit, no?
  14. To have the days surrounding Dereks remarkable achievement chronicled by Major League Baseball Productions and HBO ensures that this historic milestone will be captured with the type of style and professionalism he has become so synonymous with. I can't say I disagree.
  15. Not an injury, but Trey Harris (Mrs. Willie) went into premature labor and Willie is taking some paternity leave. FMart to be called up as a replacement. And Willie, like everyone else, was just starting to get on base. Best of luck to the new mom and dad, but when I hear the name "Trey", this is who I think of:
  16. Today's NYT: We dont even have to get a hit, Justin Turner said. He can get on and then score himself. Hes Superman. Hes better than Superman. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/30/sports/baseball/mets-hitters-batter-tigers.html?_r=1&hpw
  17. As R. A. Dickey (4-7), who pitched seven innings to earn the win, put it: The fact that youre talking to me is a little bit ridiculous. If I even see my name in the story, Ill boycott. Boycott...yet another word in the really awesome vocabulary of R. A. Dickey. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/29/sports/baseball/mets-break-long-streak-without-a-grand-slam.html
  18. I'm starting to feel pretty good about this game.
  19. Speaking of hurt, Moises Alou?
  20. Frank Robinson?
  21. Yeah, I wasn't aware of the 12-year waiting period on the contract. With 12 years for the $5.9M to grow, the math works out perfectly.
  22. According to the magazine, Madoff investments were supposed to offset debt owed to players. When the Mets wanted to get rid of Bobby Bonilla after the 1999 season, they would have owed him $5.9 million. Instead, they decided to invest that money with Madoff at a return of 10-12 percent. They would pay Bonilla $1.2 million per year for 25 years, payments based on an interest rate of 8 percent per year. So in theory, had Madoff's schemes not tanked, a seemingly horrible financial decision would have in fact created a net profit. In what world does investing $5.9 million at 10-12% net you $1.2 million annually?

  24. Oh ! Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again. (which is close to Hackensack) I always assumed they were referring to the Lodi in California. Songs that unquestionably have a reference to the general Hackensack area: Freddy Cannon's Palisades Park GYDSFKLu-TA Also Bob Dylan's Hurricane, which I couldn't find on YouTube.
