Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 First Mets managerial debut since Willie Randolph. The Looper game, as a matter of fact.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Who says you need a great cleanup hitter?Well, they have one (or more), just not batting fourth. And, nine runs with no homers? Wow!Later
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 fun game, fun game. everyone got on base. everyone pitched well. the beer was poured. the weather stayed away. good stuff.
Lundy Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 In contrast to Opening Days of recent past, this was a damp and cold one. Arrived early to tailgate around 10:20 or so, had a few refreshments, saw old friends like KC and Ed and Sharon, then headed on in to our seats in Left Field Landing. There was no respite in those left field seats. Kept bundled up the whole game. Good thing the Mets kept us busy and warm by scoring a bunch of runs. Heard the Yadier Molina home run literally clank the foul pole, right in front of my eyes. But all else was good! Made a wise decision to hit the men's room before the crowds really started to amass. No lines, no waiting. Didn't miss anything by having to wait in any lines, because of the hearty meal during tailgating. I wasn't hungry! Wish it was a few degrees warmer and wished there was sun, but it was a glorious day!
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 I actually thought it was the perfect temp! I prefer today to blistering July heat, though I think I did get a little sun/wind burn from being outside all day.I clocked 16,500 steps today, roughly 7.5 miles. There was the added trip back to Corona to my car to look for the tickets I lost. didn't find them. Only took 5 minutes in the ticket office to reprint at least. line to get in was bad though.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 yo, start tomorrow's thread! We got six months of this one can we get at least a day and a half for the second?! ;-)
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Good game!Thursday's win seemed to me to have the recipe that they are going to need to replicate for sustained success this season: scoring runs without relying on the HR and clean innings from the bullpen.Friday brings the annual tradition of having to wait an extra day for Game 2 after a long offseason. BOO!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 A really satisfying win. On-basing > homering, and 12 hits, nine walks and a hit batsmen is a lot of on-basing. Apart from a couple of long fouls, Bruce is the only one who made a bid for a homer. Lots o' baserunners is the sort of offensive foundation you can build on.Fewer than three GiDPs would be nice, as would some more aggressive or opportunistic baserunning. On the other hand, who would have bet on Bruce for the team's first stolen base? And against Molina!
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Lazy Q: Does anyone know (or have an easy way of figuring it without goingthrough 55+ games) what the Mets Opening Day W-L record is? Additionally since I'm being really lazy, what the Home Opener record is?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Gary was saying yesterday that they were 0-8, followed by 36-12. I guess yesterday would make 37-12, which adds up to 37-20, which comes to 57 openers, which sounds right. Although Greg advocates for their 1981 second half opener to count.Ben has his new page, too: http://leaptoad.com/mets/openingday.php

Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Thanks to you both (and Ben too)... not as lopsided as my blue and orange mind imagined.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 37-20 is a pace which would get you to 105 wins if projected over a full regular season. The home opener pace of 22-9 translates to around 115 wins over a full year. And if you want to eliminate those first eight seasons and call it 37-12 over your living memory, then you're talking about the equivalent to a 122-40 record. That's about as lopsided as you can get.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 My egghead is in the shop so I didn't process it that way. My kongheadwas thinking 20 losses is more than I thought it was and a lesser dealthan what is made of it sometimes -- but I now suppose I was wrong.

Additionally since I'm being really lazy, what the Home Opener record is?The Home Opener record -- not counting Opener 2.0 in 1981, counting only the Shea Opener in 2000 (and not the Tokyo Opener in which the Mets were the designated home team) -- is 37-20.In Home Openers that weren't season openers (again, not including the second season of 1981 nor Japan), the Mets' record is 15-12. For the record, the Mets lost their "home" game in Tokyo (Season Opener), won their Second Season Opener in 1981 (at Chicago) and lost their Second Season Home Opener (to Philadelphia).
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 So in the years when we had the chance to celebrate the concept of Opening Day twice, with the season's Opening Day on the road (because no matter where the Opener is, it's a cause for celebration) and then a Home Opener distinct from Opening Day, it went down like this...Win Opening Day on the Road and Win the Home Opener: 6 times1977, 1982, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2015Win Opening Day on the Road and Lose the Home Opener: 9 times1970, 1979, 1981, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2008, 2009(Plus the 1981 Second Season Openers)Lose Opening Day on the Road and Win the Home Opener: 7 times1968, 1974, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2016(2000 Opening Day was in Tokyo, when Mets were designated the home team, but it was on the road)Lose Opening Day on the Road and Lose the Home Opener: 5 times1962, 1964, 1984, 1997, 2011In doubleheader terms, score it 6 sweeps, 5 swepts and 16 splits (17 with the split season)
