stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 OE: D'OH!And a supersized image as well...
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Check your math. The magic number is 52.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Look at that home run.The ball that Mays caught might've went twice as far.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Okay, NOW cue the X-Files musicWhen should we start doing an AP Magic number thread or is this still good despite having other standings related stuff lumped in?
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Keep it all together at least until September, I say.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Willets Point wrote:Keep it all together at least until September, I say. When should I even think about posting the 25 Man Postseason Roster thread?Course the main 25 Man Roster Thread could be a good spot for that discussion
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Also its win #60 on the year. 21 more to clinch an over .500 record!
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 All-purpose means all-purpose, doesn't it?If we have separate all-purpose threads for every aspect of talking about the standings, then it's no longer "all-purpose."
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Actually, in September I want the magic number in glowing numbers on the top of the page, not in a seperate thread.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Unless the Mets have had a collossall collapse and find themselves behind the Braves.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Willets Point wrote:Actually, in September I want the magic number in glowing numbers on the top of the page, not in a seperate thread.Course we could go on a huge August win streak, Braves crap all kinds of crap in August (ditto everyonelse) and we could have the earliest clinch date ever in a normal schedule!
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 This from the guy who was pushing the panic button only yesterday.Really. Medication. Look into it.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 The Mets would have to win 25 or so games between now and Aug. 31st for that to happen.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 And the Braves and the Phillies and the Marlins would have to all lose about 25 games during that same time span.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 ="Yancy Street Gang"]And the Braves and the Phillies and the Marlins would have to all lose about 25 games during that same time span.I don't see your point...SC=Yup

Look into it.Hey I'm kidding about the wrapping up before September hits. The Braves do have me worried a bit, just in the "I've seen this before" kind of way, and posting Bobby Thomson's HR is a reminder of how any damn thing is possibleThough a nice 2 out of three or sweep and a front line starter on Monday should have me kicking back and getting ready for Eli vs Big Brother Peyton on September 10th, and feeling very happy about that situation for the first time in a LONG time
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I think the nervousness also comes from too many hours spent listening to sports radio, and reading nervous nellies on the Internet Met Community as well. Like I said a year ago, seems like the Ya Gotta Believe/Amazin' Miracle Mets attitude of the Met fans died sometime with the advent of dialouge sports radio and the internet
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I don't know about meds, but one thing that could help your psyche is to stop listening to sports radio.Or at least taking anything that is said seriously anyway.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Stop blaming the radio and newspapers for your own paranoias.(What's the plural of paranoia?)

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 If you're picking up stuff from zany web sites and stupid radio stations, you don't need to bring it here. We try to be free of that kind of nonsense.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Actually quick look at the schedule shows that we have a good shot of whitling the respective elimination numbers of NL East teams down over the next couple of weeks.at Braves 7/28-8/1at Florida 8/1-8/3vs Phillies 8/4-8/6 (could they be Abreu or Burrell less?)The return of two guys named Mike 8/8-8/10at DC 8/11-8/13at Philly 8/14-8/17Then the Rockies come in 8/19-8/20 followed by the Redbirds 8/22-8/24Then Phillies for a weekend set 8/25-8/27 and we are done with them for the yearand we wrap up August in Colorado 8/29-8/3019 out of 31 games against the East. I'd say that would knock the magic number down quite a bit by September 1st when we head to Minute Maid for a weekend set against the Stros.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 ]The return of two guys named Mike 8/8-8/10Can't wait. See you all there on 8/8.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 We'll be there - it's how we're celebrating MK's birthday

Hopefully pictures up by the 20thDon't know about September, but October should be a good monthThe Mikey games should be fun. Hell, wouldn't be something if the Mets brought Fonzie back up that series!Wonder what Olerud and Ventura are doing these days. Seriously, I haven't heard much from either since they retired
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 psst - the 20th anniversary celebration is 8/19.

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 50!Lets get this sucker down to 44 by Monday
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 That won't be possible. If the Mets sweep the Braves, the Marlins or Phillies (who are playing each other) will move into second place. The lowest possible magic number on Monday morning would be 46. (It will be 47 if the Mets sweep and the Marlins/Phillies series is a sweep either way.)
