Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Years from now, this thread will be fascinating.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Seems to me choosing to criticize a guy who's doing the math for the rest of us over the option of simply ignoring what doesn't float your boat is a helluva lot more tiresome, ugly and uninteresting.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Wow. Funny how you want me to ignore many posts that are tiresome and ugly to me, but that you didn't want to ignore my single ugly, tiresome post. No, it doesn't float my personal boat. Does that mean I shouldn't post how I feel? Or is it just that my words were too harsh for the delicate natures of the readers here?Yancy didn't seem too bothered by it. Yancy, if you were offended, I apologize. My opinion stands.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 No games have been played yet this morning. The magic number is still 92
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 As Yancy is pointing out to me, bitching and complaining usually doesn't work around here anyway.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 FWIW, despite my fears of attracting the attention of the baseball gods, I kind of like the countdown.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Five weeks ago (on the first page of this thread) the magic number was 130. That's quite a drop; it shows we're making progress towards the big goal.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 For what it's worth, this thread, as the title suggests, is a good way to keep track of standings throughout the year. The magic number part is just and added bonus (or drawback depending on your point of view). My feeling on this is simple. If we win the division, this countdown will be fun, and I'll be glad Yancy did it. If we don't win the division and fall short, this thread will make me want to hurl.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 +8.5 games over Philly. Lets Go Mets!
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Tonight's win coupled with Detroit's loss gives the Mets the best winning percentage in baseball. Detroit has played 2 more games than the Mets and have one more win and one more loss. The Mets with their 8.5 game lead in the NL East have a bigger lead in their division than all the other division leaders combined.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 WARNING: Those of you who are bored by magic numbers may want to avert your eyes. The Mets victory over the Phillies last night drops the magic number to 90.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 I thought I had explained myself, but apparently not.My only thought was that when this thread is done, it will be a laundry list of magic numbers which would be tedious to read through. I imagine most everyone will scroll right through them.Sue me, you big orange rock.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 You'll be hearing from Matt Murdock. The magic number countdown isn't for posterity's sake. It's for the present.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 BTW, I'm not angry or trying to pick a fight or anything.I changed my mind, don't sic your lawyer on me.Edit: I'm Cleon Jones.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 You're getting Magic Number Fever, aren't you?We all succumb eventually.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Florida suddenly only 2 games out of 3rd place with a nearly even RS/RA ratio.

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Adam Rubin, today in the Daily News:]It would take a collapse of historic proportions for the Mets (42-23) not to reach the playoffs. Since the first World Series in 1903, only 12 other teams have held a 9-1/2-game lead or larger as play opened on June 16. None has failed to reach the postseason. Five - all hailing from New York - won the World Series: the '98, '53 and '39 Yankees, '86 Mets and '55 Dodgers.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Even if the Mets do stumble a bit, I really don't see who in the NL East can make a run at them. We've seen how good the Phillies are. Atlanta can play a little better than they've been doing, but I see no eveidence that they can play a lot better. As for Florida, I figured they'd get better as the season wore on -- they have the second most total talent in the division. If they keep Cabrera and Willis, they'll be reasonably competitive the rest of the way.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Since our last update, the Phillies have lost twice and the Mets have won once. The magic number is 85.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Oakland has won ten games in a row.

Since the official May 21 low-water mark of 11-31 (following 7 straight losses to the craptastic Braves and surging D-Rays), they're a blazing 18-6, posting sweeps of the Braves and Blue Jays (aggregate score: 28-12) at home last week to extend an 8-game winning streak. A road sweep in the Rockies, series win in San Diego, and a home sweep of the hapless Cubs all have contributed to the streak. They've only dropped two series, in Flushing and at Alexander Graham Park, over the span where they pulled nearly even in RS/RA. We'll root for Bawlmer to filet the Fish like they did us, and for the Mystique and Aura to overwhelm 'em later this week.Sundries* NYM Pythagorean record: 40-28.* Officially #1 in the NL in RS-RA difference, #2 in runs scored to the somewhat-surprising Dodgers, and #3 in runs allowed to the Pads and the Cards.* The NL East is the run-scoringest division, on average, in the league. Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 This means we've got Soler, Martinez, Glavine for the Red Sox. I have tix for Games #1 & 3 so I miss Pedro but get to see Glavine who seems to start (and lose) every game I've attended the last 3 years.
