I have a feeling we'll beat that this year. Of course, the Mets started their season earlier in 2006 than they did 20 years ago. On July 30, 1986 the Mets played their 98th game of the season.

Apparantly no one noticed Phillies lost which knocks the number (according to MLB's standings anyway to 45

Though I'm looking at it as Philadelphia and (to a lesser extent) Washington have dealt themselves out, with Atlanta and Florida staying in to make a last push.

Of course, Florida largely folded their hand before the season.

Interesting to see the Phils cash in, though, since they're ahead of Atlanta.

Washington hasn't dealt itself out! They shitcanned Mike Stanton, added Austin Kearns, and kept Soriano. They''re the 2nd half sleeper!

Well, they cut bait on their stupid little prize bullpen, but yeah, you're right. The parts they got back have a good chance to pay immediate dividends.

Right now Philly is your 2nd place team playing St Louie this week while we do some fileting of the 3rd (by a half a game) Fish

Chances are good that the Phils will still be in second come the weekend series at Shea while the Fish will be hosting the Dodgers.

The magic number is 44.

Wyoming, the 44th state

Number 44 at Syracuse University is one of the most fabled numbers ever associated with a college football program.

Since 1954, nine players have worn the number and three earned All-American honors. Those three--Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little--rank among the finest running backs ever to play the college game. Ernie Davis is the only Syracuse player to win the Heisman Trophy as the nation's most outstanding college football player.

The number was retired in 2005.

The Syracuse University zip code was changed sometime in the '90's from 13210 to 13244.

Derrick Coleman, the All-American basketball forward also wore #44 during his undergraduate years at Syracuse.

Center Rony Seikaly (pictured, far left) and forward Derrick Coleman (#44) were key components to Syracuse's run to the NCAA title game in 1987.

Magic number's been stuck for a few days. Hopefully it will be reduced a little today.

Great to again see some activity in this thread.

Sadly unless there is a 2nd series in a row lost by the Mets, we will not see Mr. Seaver in this thread.

Ah well...

I'd much rather see the magic number go down by two tomorrow...

Elster88 - "Oh for crying out loud."

Exactly my thoughts. I just want to see the Mets wrap this thing up and clinch the division and home field as soon as possible. I really don't care what numbers do (or don't) make it into this thread for the sake of a photo someone has their heart set on posting. I just want to see the magic number steadily decrease as quickly as possible. The only number that I long to see is 0.

I thought "Ah well.." gave away my jocularity on the subject

Speaking of which, that Lundy character hasn't posted for two weeks.

I'm sorry to interrupt the Magic Number Thread with talk of the standings, but Philly still has a shot at the playoffs. 3 out of the loss column in the wildcard hunt.
