Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 No single team in the NLWest is all that good, but every team is hanging a couple games above .500The NL East is obviously being brought down by the two anchors.Basically so far it's 3 really bad teams: Pitt, Fla & Wash taking a serious beaing from most of the other 13. Only the Cubs are hanging in that limbo between average and lousy - and that can be at least partially written off to them missing Wood, Prior & Lee.The NL holds a slight (like 4 games) edge in Interleague since it started in 1997 - even as the AL won a significant chunk of last year's tilts.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Aren't the Cubs always missing Wood and Prior?

Oh well. Lost the week of May 15 to cyberhistory.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 The Braves have played 18 games at home and 32 on the road. I think that is the lowest home/away ratio in baseball. They are 12-6 at home and return to Atlanta to play LA today.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 A few days later, and the magic number is now 105.If everything goes perfectly this weekend (a long shot, I know) we'll be in double digits on Monday morning.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 On Saturday, the Mets win one, the Braves lose two, and the Phillies lose one.The magic number is now 103.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Thanks to a 7 game win streak by the Reds, right now the Mets would not qualify for the wildcard.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Elster88 wrote:Really?I think the point was that we're in first place. Also, I'm not sure what the "not qualifying for the WC" comment was about. At the close of business on 6/7, the Mets had the best record in the National league, 1/2 game better than co-division leaders StL and CIN, 1.5 games ahead of ARZ.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Thanks for the helpful info, all, but I realize that the Mets are in first and would make the playoffs if the season ended today regardless of wildcard standings. This is not new to me.You are correct now Gwreck, but I posted before the Mets won yesterday, so they were in a virtual tie. Maybe the percentage points were leaning one way or the other, but you and FK are both nitpicking and missing what I was saying. Here's what I am saying: The Mets are not, at this point, running away from the majority of the league with a great record, so the playoffs may not be as easy to qualify for as it seemed a few weeks ago.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Playoffs haven't seemed easy to me at all this season. The rotation is too shakey, and the magic number too high, for us to be making October plans just yet.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 What's the quick and easy way to calculate magic number?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Determine the maximum number of wins that the second place team can get. (162 - the number of games that the team has lost.)See how many games the first place team needs to win to get one more win than that maximum number.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 NY Mets 35 23 Philadelphia 32 27 Atlanta 29 31 Washington 27 33 Florida 21 36 With 27 losses, the Phillies can win, at most, 135 games. For the Mets to get 136 wins, they'd need to win 101 more games. Therefore, the magic number is 101.Edited to highlight the magic number.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Thanks. Double digits would be nice.Edit: So, technically, everyone's magic number on Opening Day is 163?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I guess so, yes.If the number of games you win, plus the number of games that your opponent loses, adds up to 163 or more, then you know you've finished ahead of them in the standings.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Magic number over Atlanta is currently 97.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 The only team in the AL West with a record over .500....Texas.What a strange world we live in.

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Since the last magic number update, the Mets have won twice, and the Phillies lost once. The magic number is now 94.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 The Mets beat the Phillies tonight. The lead is up to 7 games. And the magic number has dropped to 92
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Keeping a daily count of magic number makes for a really, really, ugly and uninteresting thread.
