"The magic number is so now so low that it's below President Bush's approval rating."

It had been a few days since it dropped last.

I would have if lubitul had a picture with a clearer number posted. But I was on the fence, and decided to lower The Hammer.

The magic number is 28, and is back on the other side of the Mississippi River. Come back to us, magic number!

Texas, the 28th state

The magic number is 27.

Florida, the 27th state

And suddenly, the magic number has jumped all the way to the Atlantic coast!

If the Nationals come back and beat the Phillies today, the magic number will drop again, but for now, the magic number is 26.

Michigan, the 26th state

Speaking of the Nats their tragic number for the division is now under 20 and sitting on 19.

Incredibly (or maybe not considering it is the Phils bullpen) the Nats mounted a comeback and trail by one in the bottom of the 8th!

That's a great shot of Kingman, isn't it? I believe Walter Ioss of SI should get the photo credit.

I think the world is divided among peeps who are too many steps ahead, those too many steps behind, and the rare folks who are in the moment.

Kong was a rare talent, but he too infrequently seemed to be in the moment. That picture is an exception. It's beautiful.

Bad off day for the Mets. Yanks cripple Sox, Braves win (yeah they aren't so much with the mattering but it leaves them alive for one more day) and the Phils are up 4-0 against the Cubs in the 4th

Its good to be up by Double Digits though!

5-0 Phillies. They're playing a nice game against the Cubs tonight.

The beauty of the double digit lead means that I can enjoy the good play without worrying about it.

Yup. Though I do enjoy lowering magic numbers without doing a single thing more than a good baseball game! =;)

The magic number is 25, which was worn by CPF contributor Frank Thomas in 1962 -

Now I know why Bill Clinton was at the game. He wanted to see the magic number arrive in Arkansas. As Scarlett said, the magic number is 25.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals are on the verge of becoming the first team to be eliminated from contention for a division title. Their tragic number is 1. The next time the Tigers win or the Royals lose, the Royals' chances of winning the AL Central will be officially ended.

Other magic numbers from around the big leagues:

Yankees: 32
Tigers: 30
Athletics: 33
Cardinals: 37
Dodgers: 35

The Cardinals are now only one game ahead of the Reds and three games ahead of the next Wild Card team, San Diego. They may very well miss the playoffs for the first time in a while.
