Uni Watch, I think, has written more on this, but there's very little precedent for baseball captains wearing regalia to indicate thier status. Carter didn't, which made Keith look even sillier.

I think that the day the appointment came down, Charle Samuels asked Keith if he wanted something on is jersey and Keith answered somethihng like, "Sure, whatever," without giving it much thought.

Not that I'm arguing for it, because I'm not, but considering that Jullio Franco was signed to fill a captain-ish role, as well as pinch hit and backup at first, is there any reason a bench player, particularly one with a two-year contract, should be disqualified from the honor?

This is the kind of hat a team captain should wear:

And the best part is, Keith doesn't look silly at all in that hat.

The magic number is 16.

If some team other than the Mets was able to beat the Phillies, the number would be dropping a little bit more quickly.

Tennessee, the 16th state.

We're almost down to the original 13 colonies.

I know he wore 17 but when he first came to the Mets he was 16 and for some reason that's always how I thought of him - 16.

="Centerfield"]Isn't soupcan our captain? I think he should have to wear that hat.

No, no, no - I respectfully resigned that position some time ago.

And if I hadn't - the wearing of that hat would've made me do it anyway.

I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

It was on one moonlit night, stars shinin' bright
Whispered on high, love said goodbye

I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

Well, it was on one moonlit night, stars shinin' bright
Whispered on high, your lover said goodbye
I said blue moon of Kentucky, keep on a-shinin'
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Left me blue
Left me blue

Phillies and Braves rained out today. Doubleheader tomorrow.

The Teds/Sponges are betting on a Sept. 17th clincher in Pittsburgh. We'll be in the upper deck for that game. Section 314, Row P. Lovely views of the downtown. Stop on by.

That's the 20th anniversary of another NL East clincher.

To put this in proper perspective - the Mets have 30 games to play. The Phillies could win EVERY game between now and the end of the season, and so long as the Mets play .500 ball they still win the division.

That's pretty heady stuff.

I hadn't realized that the Phillies and Braves were already scheduled to play a doubleheader today. And that's going to be interesting - I don't know that they'll be able to start the first game at 1:05, get it completed, and clear out the fans so that those with tickets for the 7:05 start can enter the stadium. It will be interesting.

And, apparently, there is some possibility that the two teams will have to play back-to-back doubleheaders to make up for last night's rainout.

With any luck, the Braves will be one very tired team when they come to Shea on Monday.

That's pretty standard scheduling when separate-admission doubleheaders are required.
