The Freddy Peralta talks are about to resume in earnest. Both New York clubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest. Some low-revenue clubs that can absorb Peralta’s $8 million salary are in play as well.

The Brewers’ price, even with Peralta under club control for one more season, remains high. A major-league-ready starting pitcher figures to be part of the desired return, so the team can remain a contender. And the calculus also includes this: Any team that acquires Peralta can recoup one prospect by making him a qualifying offer and receiving a likely Competitive Balance Round A pick in the low 30s in 2027.

I'd like Peralta, but not at the expense of a Sproat/Tong and definitely not McLean. I'm okay with someone a little further down the food chain for a guy you only get for one year.

Someone like Peterson would also meet the definition of "a major-league-ready starting pitcher" but I don't know if that would satisfy the Brewers. It obviously wouldn't be a one-for-one. The Mets would have to add someone else, but perhaps not necessarily a starter.

I wouldn't like to give up Peterson. He was fine until he hit the wall last year.

The most innings he had pitched in a year before that was about 120. Last year he ran into problems when the count got up over that. He ended up pitching 160+ innings. I think that he will lengthened out this year and pitch better towards year end.

Peralta got a little bit lucky last year, so I'd be careful what I offered for him. (Like Lopez, he's somebody Tong could be better than by the end of this season.)

And from the Brewers perspective, I'll believe a contending team would deal a good starter making $8M for players who can't help them this year when I see it.

There would have been plenty of room for Williams. Robert is in the last year of his contract, and Semien might well not be a regular by the time his contract is done.

This is a reasonable deployment of prospect capital. Williams is totally unproven and Sproat has a tiny sample size in the majors. Maybe they’d be on the roster and capable of making meaningful contributions in 2027 or 2028 but also maybe not. And as noted, this isn’t a gutting of the system, it’s a strategic deployment of assets.

I wish that Skubal would have been available for these chips but this isn’t bad.

I don’t know. I’m notoriously bad at judging trades. I’m sure I’ll come around once I see Peralta pitch. Right now I’m mourning Jett and Sproat.

Peralta certainly hit his (so far) high water mark last year but he also has a career ERA/WHIP of 3.59/1.13 and has started 30+ games each of the last three years. I like this deal. Sproat departing while Tong + McLean stay, which I think all along was the most likely outcome amongst those three.

Love, love this trade. I never thought Jett, at 5'7", would make it in the majors. Still don't.

Tobias Myers is more than a throw-in. Peralta gives you innings and allows Manaea/Peterson/ Senga to be more comfortable (and appropriate) as mid-rotation pieces instead of front-liners. And this relieves pressure on McLean to be THE MAN.

Losing Sproat and Williams hurts. But you've got your ace now, which is great. Don't sleep on Tobias Myers either- he's a good spot starter/long man who could come in handy. This also means Tong can mature in AAA for a year, which he needs.

The 2026 Mets got much better today. The 2027-28 Brewers probably did, too.

I don't know what "terribly available" means, but there is no indication that he was "close to bust," except that we are all pretty close to bust at any given time.

He suffered an injury in 2024 that was supposed to cost him the full season, but he still managed to get back on the field for a full 33 games, and another 22 in the AFL.

He returned for a full season in 2025, and again performed at peak level, with all of his skill set engaged.

Williams is still very highly regarded. I voted for him in the "who's sorry" poll, but I've learned not to get too upset when prospects get dealt. For every Pete Crow-Armstrong there may be a dozen Shawn Abners.

Peralta gives the Mets the proven ace they lacked. Hopefully, McLean can pick up where he left of last season, which would give the Mets 2 quality starters at the top of the rotation. With Peterson, Manaea, Holmes and Senga to round out the rotation, it should be improved over last season. Tobias Myers has experience as a spot starter and offers some depth and insurance in the event of injury/poor performance within the rotation. Otherwise, he should help to bolster the bullpen.

I hate to lose Sproat and Williams, but overall, I really like this deal.

Forget about Framber Valdez. He's had to circulate videos telling clubs he's not a bad clubhouse presence.

I'm still curious if they are working on a Skubal deal! They could still build a package from a group that includes Baty, Tong, Vientos, Peterson, Senga. Imagine a rotation of Skubal, Peralta, McLean, Manaea, Holmes.

This. Both players would have been a part of this year's team. Peralta's an extremely good bet to regress to his career norms, so we probably got a year of a 3.60 ERA for two people who will probably be starters before the year is out and continue to be starters for a while. I'm not happy about this at all.
