Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 (edited) Disaster.Five years, $155 million. It's like we're going into rebuilding mode without the benefit of getting prospects back in a fire sale.I know the only thing that matters is what the roster looks like on Opening Day and not Dec. 10. But I'd sure like to see something. They almost have to go all in on Tucker or Bellinger. Edited December 10, 2025 by Marshmallowmilkshake
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Not surprised after the Schwarber contract David Stearns is in the process of making himself very unpopular to Mets fansJagoff loses Diaz and Pete within two daysHaving said all this Stearns is probably comfortable with both of these outcomes
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Is this a rebuild year now?1B. Vientos 2B. SemienSS. Lindor3B. BatyLF ?CF ?RF. SotoDH ?
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Anybody know a good pitchfork sharpener? Or is it more fun if it’s rusty and dull?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 This is a sad day.We may well have good days to come, and some might say that Stearns’s job depends on those good days coming mighty fast. But still a very sad day.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Stearns does know that for a franchise to be successful, the fans need to want to spend money on the team, right?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Best part of Stearns ran down his mother's leg
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 He will be a liability for them in the latter end of the deal. We got his best years. Hadn't expected him to return. However, this team has no identity right now. I can't even see what the front office is trying to do.SHOW ME THE PLAN!

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Anybody know a good pitchfork sharpener? Or is it more fun if it’s rusty and dull? The latter, of course. I really don't know how to react to this news. I kinda wrotePete off weeks ago knowing he was going elsewhere.I imagine there will be a lot more funky **** going down atthe Citi in the coming weeks so we will see...
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Going all in onMacleanSproatTongJettBengelis a part
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 (edited) Not that I'm happy about this or anything ...But considering that I was saying Last off-season that the Mets should let Pete walk if another team was willing to offer a 30 y/o 1B/DH a five year contract, then it's tough to be too critical of them for doing so now over a 31 y/o 1B/DH.Yeah, the market seems more aggressive so far this winter as compared to last when nobody was willing to even discuss four years for Pete. And now this year we see back-to-back 30+mil/five year contracts for over-30/bat-only sluggers in barely over a 48 hour window.Be interesting to see how all this shakes out. At least when Diaz left they had already (partially) pre-replaced him. Edited December 10, 2025 by Frayed Knot

DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Chris Davis, Part II for Balmer.I really really wanted him to retire a Met but 5/155 is steep.

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 They may get good about the time Soto opts out When can that happen?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 (edited) After 2029. Edited December 10, 2025 by Gwreck
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 I think it's the Mets who can opt out of Soto's contract. After five years, they either give him a raise that would cover the final ten years, or they let him become a free agent. The contract would go from $51 million per year to $53 million over those last ten years.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 It certainly seems like a rebuild. Which is hard to fathom after going all in for Soto next year.I'm emotional the last few days. But trying to put that aside. Even if the Mets win, and make the playoffs, Stearns and Cohen have no idea the damage they've done by discarding three beloved franchise icons in one winter.Fandom is not rational.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Soto has to first notify them he wants to opt-out, and the Mets then have a small window in which they can raise the salary by $4M annually to negate that decision. And if they don’t do so, Soto can then finalize the opt-out or stay, if he wants.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Is this a rebuild year now? I think, to the likes of David Stearns, they are all rebuild years.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 It's starting to feel like 1977. Seaver. Strawberry. deGrom. Wheeler. Reyes. Diaz. Alonso. Stearns and Cohen have badly underestimated what losing a franchise icon means. I will never forgive David Stearns.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Stearns and Cohen have badly underestimated what losing a franchise icon means. I will never forgive David Stearns. I can be pretty forgiving if there’s a World Series title around these parts. If it’s an 85 win, #6 seed if we get lucky team…not so much.In a vacuum, any one departure would have been fine, but 3 icons leaving in the same offseason is extraordinarily tough to bear, and I agree that it’s not at all clear that factor has been sufficiently considered.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Be honest, though. Trading Alonso to get Lunchbucket back is a pretty sweet deal.

Agree. It's World Series or bust. If they don't win it all, none of this will have been worth it.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 Fandom is not rational. And this irrational fan is really pissed.Stearns had better come back from the meetings with some needed players or he shouldn’t come back. Later
