Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Mets name Green the manager. Three year deal. MFS62 1
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Good move, but this means he won't be added to the front office as a "baseball guy". Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 In addition, I too also approve, as well.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Did not see this coming because (1) Green seemed to be pretty clear that he didn’t want to be a full time manager; and (2) I was expecting an open search process after the season ended. In fairness, maybe that did happen to some degree —- presumably some of the most frequently-mentioned candidates were already available to be interviewed — (e.g., Cora, Beltran).
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Holy smokes, right? I guess his disinterest was more about being disinterested until the right terms came along. whippoorwill 1
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Great negotiating strategy if true. I'm surprised as well, but certainly OK with it.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Who do we think made this decision? Well done Green, I approve

Yeah, I'm kinda with Gwreck here. Sure, he's allowed to change his mind, but the Mets have presumably been looking at potential managers and had some favorites whose tires are worth kicking (right? right?!). Maybe he is the best guy, but it seems odd to pull the trigger without going any further into the process.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Yeah worried he's scoring on a dead cat bounce but can't argue too much with his words or actions. Hell I dunno
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 The Mets are 37-38 under Green. Is that even a “dead cat bounce” (?)
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 At 37-38 he's already learned that it ain't easy being Green. Later
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Mets fans online seem very split on this, mostly for the reasons brought up here
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 He actually strikes me as a manager. He has the vibe. Both Mendoza and Rojas were a little too laid-back or milquetoast. MFS62 1

He didn't exactly engineer a miracle turnaround, he just did better than the previous guy, and that's a pretty low bar.

Is that even a “dead cat bounce” (?) yes, compared to where they were. But yeah they struggled still under Green, got shut out too often, lost a lot of winnable serieses and that's with Lindor & Bichette having much better halves. Baty too. (Ewing not so much. Alvy don't get me started)
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Hey, there's six games left in the season. If the Mets win all of them, then by winning percentage Andy Green will technically be the fifth-most successful manager in Mets history.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I guess this means Beltran gets the front office gig MFS62 1
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 I’m surprised to hear this. I would think the organization would want to do a thorough search to make sure they explored all possible options. Maybe they did. Maybe Cora didn’t want the gig and Beltrán preferred a different role. I’m just ok with Green. Doesn’t seem like he’ll make a big difference either way. And has the benefit of following a guy who appeared to be a net negative.

But he achieved that after they traded the best arms in the bullpen, two starters, and a solid fourth outfielder. MFS62 1
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Are Jerry Manuel and Andy now the only Met managers who interimed their way into the full-time job? Westrum took over mid-season, but I feel like he got the job on the spot. Harrelson, too.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 Listened to the press conference. Doesn’t sound like they did any search at all. In fact I came away thinking the “he’s not interested in the job” line was a bunch of BS.

I can easily accept that either or both of these things happened since the time that Green made his comment about not being interested: (1) He realized how much he enjoyed managing again and changed his mind about his interest level (2) His daughters/wife told him that while they love having him around, they're in their senior year of high school and he shouldn't pass up a chance to manage a major league team in order to be around a little bit more for a couple months -- and which he might not miss anyway if there's a lockout.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Restores the Gil Hodges tradition of the Mets drawing their managers from their roster of former players, even if his qualification for this category is only slightly more than technical.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I like it. The players on the current roster seem to like it also.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Of course, you're rarely going to get a player going on record with "Ugh! Three more years of this guy!"
