Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 Getting back a minor league 3B with good slg, Cole Mathis (according to some guy on the internet)
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I did not see this coming I kinda thought Peterson had checked out when he failed to backup home whippoorwill 1
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Cole Mathis, 2024 2nd round draft pick out of College of Charleston (I think that's in Charleston), turns 23 y/o in a few weeks. 6' 2" / 210, R/R, listed in BB-Ref as 1B/DH/P though has played some 3B too. Hasn't pitched at all since turning pro so I suspect that's in his rearview. Only played 29 games in 2025 (not sure why) plus some AZ fall league action. Has split '26 between low and high A with combined stats of: .272/.396/..585 so, yeah, that's a lot of slug and a lot of walks. But again it's only 39 G/192 PAs so you'd like to know the story behind all that so if anyone is passing through South Bend, where he's currently plying his trade, drop by a game, snoop around a bit, and let us know what you find. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mathis000col

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 He had TJ surgery so he lost time. I don’t know much about him but I’m sure the Mets will ruin whatever ability he has.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I have faith in this Mathis fella. He has potential to be the next Luke Ritter. MFS62 1
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Watch Peterson regain his early 2025 form in 3.. 2.. 1.. whippoorwill 1
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 This might turn out to be a wonderful wonderful trade, but it's not for me to say.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Peterson was pretty much the senior Met— a mantle that now falls to Francisco Lindor, with Tylor Megilll backing him up in absentia. Trades between teams currently locked up in a series add extra drama. They even appear in drama, as Ricardo Rincón went to Oakland for Marshall McDougall in the middle of an A's/Indians series in Moneyball. The one I associate with the Mets is José Cardenal switching teams between a doubleheader with the Phils. Maybe Peterson goes for the Cubs tonight.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I'd be unpleasantly surprised if the Cubs can fix Peterson that quickly, but stranger things have happened. A prospect's stats don't really start being meaningful until he reaches AA, but Mathis has more than enough upside (fairly acknowledging that the bar was really, really low) to justify this trade.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 If we get really lucky, this guy could become the next Jeff Manto. the fans were chanting “ Pete a- Lon- so. “ The wrong david is gone. later
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 The hardest part about this trade was pulling Peterson's head out of his ass to inform him. seawolf17, MFS62, The Hot Corner and 1 other 4
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 He's going to come out of the bullpen and throw a scoreless inning tonight, isn't he? Oy. MFS62 1
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Some info on Mathis. He's not actually ranked 30 on our Cubs list, he was about to be bumped into the low teens when he was traded. Cole Mathis - 2026 Chicago Cubs Top Prospects Ranking - North Side Baseball NORTHSIDEBASEBALL.COM Cole Mathis was supposed to be one of the fastest movers from the 2024 Cubs draft class, but sadly, that has not been the case. Mathis had some of the best batted-ball data from his class...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Will Peterson get the organization's most hastily assembled scoreboard tribute montage?
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Pirates in Cubs division; I’m also a Pirates fan….this makes me double happy.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I just realized the Cubs could soon have three Mets first-rounders in their lineup at once.

Right now the Cubs have so many of their own pitchers on the IL that they're in need of Anyone, and I assume that's what triggered this deal. Peterson, who will turn 31 before the season is out, is going to be a FA at the end of the year and the combo of the age and a lousy season makes it unlikely that the Mets would try to sign him anyway. So maybe the Cubs' short term desperation enticed them to offer a better prospect than a guy in his Peterson's would normally command prompting Stearns to strike while the offer was on the table even as it puts the Mets short by one more arm themselves.
