Having to go with David Ortiz killed my score - I totally vaporlocked on Jim Rice and Dwight Evans

I got some nice scores with:

Jim Bounton (HOU/ATL - 0.6%)

I lean a whole lot on Ball Four when I do this. It got me Tommy Davis as my Met/Astro at 0.1%.

Mike Phillips as a Met/Giant surprised me at only 0.04%. I may be just at the exact right age to think that more Met fans would think of Mike Phillips.

The thing about Bouton's time in Atlanta is that it was after a five year or so gap* in his career so it wasn't

covered in BALL FOUR unless you had a later updated anniversary-type of edition (of which there were several).

His comeback was essentially a publicity stunt and the Braves were a bottom feeding organization at the time

and so were willing to take him on.

Not going to lie, I did look up SFG's 2002 squad to help with the ATL one. I was racking my brain and had a few that I didn't want to risk for fear of making it look ugly as I so liked the metsian bits. Annoyed that I didn't use Mike Hampton for the sliver slugger though, but having said that thinking about him for the Sliver Slugger lead me to thinking of the Bumgarner one. Got my rarity down to 26 which is probably as low as I've gone. Of course simply completing the grid is a rarity for me.

Shane Bieber at 14% (CLE <3.00 ERA) was the only double digit guy. I was afraid to get too cute with my knowledge of Cleveland history.

I used a few NYMs to get some rarity picks:

CIN/non-US born = Danny Graves: 0.3%

GG/1 G Pitched = Ron Darling: 0.87% (I was like 80% sure he had won one GG in his career so I risked it with my last pick)

non-US/1 G Pitched = Eduardo Escobar: 0.1%

otoh, Jose Canseco for 30 HRs/1 G Pitched not as rare as I expected: 11%

Should have gone with Don Drysdale as my .300-hitting Dodger, but for some reason, the name Drysdale kept eluding me. Despite his Hall-of-Fame eminence, he gets entangled with Don Larsen and Don Gullet and even Don Sutton in the Great Continuity of Don in my brain.

Josh Beckett and Brad Penny are part of group of three-to-five pitchers in my head:

  1. May or may not have started with the Marlins.

  2. May or may not have moved on to or finished with the Dodgers.

  3. Were borderline All-Stars for a few years there, but were never that great.

  4. Were nonetheless kinda known for having a superstar's arrogance.

  5. Possibly had a career-defining big moment in the post-season that elevated their profile.

  6. Possibly dated Alyssa Milano.

  7. Possibly enjoyed cocaine and/or HGH.

  8. Possibly soaked a rich team for a rich contract and an unproductive tenure during the second half of their careers.

  9. Were possibly involved in a couldn't-keep-it-zipped or couldn't-hold-his-liquor type of scandal.

  10. Are pretty easy to forget today despite having been pretty prominent/semi-nortorious just a decade or so ago.

Maybe "Dated Alyssa Milano" will be the third column in a future Immaculate Grid.

I got too cute trying to go rare and blew the ninth guess.

Up until that fatal choice i had a nice streak going with everyone at 3% or under.

WAS: Warren Cromarte, Jayson Werth, Rusty Staub

MIL: John Jaha, Tommy Harper*, Steve Hovley*

ATL: Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock

Adcock was a 1B so I took a shot. Turns he played RF but only prior to becoming a Brave. My alternate choice was C Del Crandell, that guess would have been correct.

The Milwaukee line was 0.4%, 0.3%, and 0.2%

* Seattle Pilots
