Ours... at least for 2 years and maybe 3.

$86M 2 years. Vesting option in the 3rd year.

Who's gonna break it to Jordany Valdespin that he's now JV2?

I'm oddly optimistic of this signing. The number next to 'age' is the only thing not to like about him. He's a tick below JdG stuff-wise, but his stuff is actually on the mound eating up very good innings. Plus his velo has held strong at 95 for years. We just can't afford a one-year "changing leagues and teams" dip or any other such bullshit.

Also, we do have two alpha dogs fighting for number 1 alpha dog position??

Yeah, I like Verlander. But still should've kept deGrom (too!) But at least this helps the "top-flight talent to have in short series in 2023" problem that was one of the biggest issues with losing deGrom.

I figure they're probably got MeGill and/or Peterson slotted into a 5th spot, you'd still like one above average starter to add in I'd think.

Well there's also the thing about his total of one MLB game between 2000 and 2001. Coming back from those two surgeries and winning a Cy Young is terrific and largely ameliorates that, but it's still there.

Those are his pre-Met rest years. Through that demented sphere, it becomes a thing to be grateful for.

I've been spending the last several minutes comparing JdG and JV from different points in their career. Go have fun everyone: https://stathead.com/tiny/6r0PFhttps://stathead.com/tiny/6r0PF

This means Ben Verlander too, so it's not all great

Ben is Justin's brother, a former minor-league player who is now a media personality and podcast host.

Michael Perez was the last Met to wear 35. It's been the preferred number for assignment to transients since Jacob Rhame, and it ain't like Rhame was a long-hauler: Jared Hughes, Trevor Hildenberger, Brandon Drury, Colin Holderman, Perez (h/t MBTN/UMDB for the refresher). Adam Wilk was 35 for one infamous Harvey-suspended day between Logan Verrett and Rhame. You have to back to Dillon Gee for a 35 with a modicum or more of distinction.

Between Max and Justin, Mets may be setting a trend with starters older than their uniform numbers.

I'm not at all convinced that throwing money at pitchers is the best way to go right now. Scherzer wasn't worth his salary last year, and Verlander has to duplicate last year twice to be worth his.

That being said, I've always been a fan and if there's any chance of him getting to 300 in a Mets uniform..
