I worry about West Coast road trips. I'm sure some of you out there have the actual stats, but it feels like several promising Mets seasons have been derailed on a long visit to California. Of course, this year's Mets have a buffer and even if they go 0-10 (heaven forbid) they will still be in first place!

very true, I think that the '86 Mets were one of the few Mets teams that didn't struggle in the California trips

The last true Disastrous West Coast Road Trip was 2010. Mets went into the break at 48-40, 4 games behind the Braves and one game behind the Dodgers for the Wild Card.



They went 2-9 against SF, LA, and ARZ, and ended the road trip in third place (passed by Philadelphia who would win the division) and totally out of it.



In the 2-11 run against LA and SF last August, the worst was at home. The only 2 wins came in California.

I think, generally, I'm on board with how DiComo lays things out here:

--Bullpen looks WERRYSOME right now

--BIG opportunity to dangle Davis/Smith to upgrade at DH

Just wanna say, before we embark on the holiday weekend, that I hope we don't

look back on it in September and say - "yeah, that 4th of July Weekend is really

where the wheels came off and they could never put them back on."

The starting rotation continues to fall apart due to injury and illness. Going into the July 4th weekend, the rotation is essentially, Walker, Peterson, Scherzer, a struggling Carrasco, and Trevor Williams until Bassitt returns from the COVID IL. The bullpen beyond Diaz (possibly D. Smith) "...is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." The bullpen is devoid of a reliable lefty. I am growing increasingly concerned. The Mets are treading water right now. They were barely above .500 for the month of June.



The Mets need DeGrom to join Scherzer at the top of the rotation. I have no doubt that DeGrom will eventually pitch and I expect him to do so at an elite level. I just don't have faith that he will do so for an extended period. The Mets need a left handed reliever that can be counted on to shut done the opposition most of the time.

Generally, the bullpen is a time for angst. Diaz has been solid and Drew Smith has had a few rough outings, but has been pretty good the majority of the time. Lugo and Ottavino need to get some consistency, they seem to be hit or miss. The lack of a reliable lefty out of the bullpen has been a problem all seaon and seems more evident with each time we call on one of our "lefty specialists". I have virtually no faith in Shreve or Rodriguez.

I'm not so sure, with the three-batter rule, lefty specialists are so much a thing anymore. Everybody's gotta be a generalist.

True, the role lefty specialists has been diminished by the 3 batter rule, but there is certainly a place for a quality lefty (or two) in the pen. It's still quite helpful to have a reliable lefty to face a Harper, Soto, Olson, Freeman, Bellinger, Alvarez, Ohtani, etc. in a big spot with the game on the line. It's not like teams are going to pinch hit for these sluggers.

My WERRY about the suddenly sonambulent offense (granted, Marte and McNeil missing, but this dead-zone has stretched now beyond their respective disappearances), is making me rethink whether I actually want to "stand firm" on earlier pronouncements I wouldn't promote the sturdier looking of Vientos/Baty/Rodriguez, put at DH and bat em 9th for 1 week, and watch what happens.

I know he hasn't hit at AAA yet, but it would really have made sense to promote Alvarez when McCann went down.

If he doesn't hit you can send him back down when McCann is back, if he does you can keep him on and demote Dom. Right now he can catch 3 days a week and get some other batting done as PH/DH.

Vientos similarly could have had a whirl.

Yeah, I like promoting big shot prospects as injury replacements. It takes the pressure off of them if they arrive as temps.

Saw Alvarez here in Syracuse Tuesday night. He's batting around .110 and looked pretty lost at the dish.

Alvarez seems at every level to start slow, get adjusted, slow down as they adjust to him, then rake. He's only 20. The Mets have a huge need at DH, but he's not the answer (yet).

When I see Alvarez' slow start I keep reminding myself that Willie Mays started out something like 0-24 before he got his first major league hit. And I don't panic.
