Mets have a Kyrie Irving problem.

jesus fucking christ. it's not that hard. how many major leaguers and minor leaguers are there? how many olympians? how many players in the major sports and their farm systems, how many college players.

how many got vaccinated? how many lived to tell the harrowing tale.

how many got covid? how many got long covid? how many had various complications?

i dare him to find any athlete who, outside of an actual allergic reaction, had any meaningful side effects that were appreciably worse than "mild covid, but without endagering anyone else"

More importantly, how many didn't get vaccinated, got Covid, experienced mild or no symptoms, shrugged about all the fuss, but took the time to pass it on to a half dozen people who soon spread it to God-knows-how-many?

“Right now we are still 3 ½ weeks away, so a lot can happen,” Nimmo said

I'm telling you, give Max Scherzer a box of syringes and let him just sidle up to guys in the clubhouse and give them the jab.

This rule is kinda bullshit though. 1) why not opposing players? 2) why are we letting unvaccinated fans in? if its about health and safety, neither of those things should be happening.

The Post asked seven Mets players Wednesday whether they were vaccinated. From that group, three players (Scherzer, Jeff McNeil and Robinson Cano) said they were vaccinated. Four others (Nimmo, Pete Alonso, Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis) declined to answer.

Great. This is going to affect Alonso as well.

As M.L.B. and the union negotiated a new labor agreement, they also agreed that any player who is unable to play in any games as a result of any government regulation because of his vaccination status “may be placed” temporarily on the restricted list, where pay and service time are lost. Service time determines players' eligibility for salary arbitration and free agency.

Okay, so I guess this means that the Mets will be able to field a full 26-man roster for their home games, but they'll have to make player maneuvers in order to do so. Let's say that Nimmo isn't vaccinated, so the Mets decide to use Khalil Lee to replace him during home games. But with the new limit on player options, I think (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Lee could only be sent to Syracuse five times this year, so on the sixth homestand the Mets would have to opt for someone else. Multiply that by however many unvaccinated players there might be, and that will add up to a huge roster churn. If this is how it plays out, we'll a lot more of guys like Mason Williams and Billy McKinney, rent-a-Mets with brief tenures.

I saw somewhere that Alonso said he was vaxxed.

The reason it doesn't apply to visiting teams is because it's a mandate on New York employers. So, yes, it doesn't apply to visiting teams.

Nimmo is going to lose a lot of fan goodwill really really fast if he refuses to play home games.

Building on what Lefty said, under the NY City rules, unvaccinated NBA players can play in New York (or Brooklyn) if they are on the visiting team. The rule only applies to employees of a New York City based team.

What if the Mets and Nets (and that team from the Bronx) moved their corporate headquarters out of the City to, say, Westchester County?

Would that change the players' eligibility?

It might work, but would be a pain in the butt considering the regulation might be repealed at any (near) time.

Missing service time also has the potential to delay Nimmo's free agency by a year.

As things stand now, Nimmo will be a FA next season but he doesn't have a big buffer if he starts losing days.

His service time currently sits at 5 yrs + 42 days so he needs 130 or more 'active' days in order to not get that delayed for a full season.

I'd like to say I'm sorry to Jeff McNeil for assuming he was a shitty anti-vaxxer. I'm going to put the work in to be a better me, and be more accepting of all viewpoints (except shitty anti-vaxxers) on this journey of internet personal growth I'm about to embark on. I will donate the five crane bucks I brazenly waved around on this forum to RFK Jr. or some shit. So sorry, Squirrel. 💙🧡

its still dumb. if being unvaccinated outdoors at citi field is dangerous then they shouldnt let thousands of unvaccinated fans in. if its not dangerous, make an exemption for outdoor workers and tell the unvaccinated Mets to get changed in their cars and avoid the clubhouse.

New York Mayor Eric Adams reiterated that while he remains optimistic about the COVID 19-related numbers he's seeing, the city's professional sports teams are going to have to wait their turn as far as potential vaccination-mandate rollbacks are concerned.

Mayor Adams about to lift the vaccination mandate for athletes and performers, per multiple reports. Kyrie and the personal choice pros will take the court, field, whatever

I'm not. Too much money at stake. It's a pretty stupid rule when applied to outdoor sports and only the home teams. Kylie Irving benefits the most from the fact that the lockout ended, is how I'd spin it.

It was a dumb rule to begin with in that if the virus amd being unvaccinated are truly damgerous*, it should have applied equally to visiting teams and fans.

I'm glad to have less distractions around the Mets!

I shouldn't have said very surprised, I'm just a little surprised because

I am too, but I have to admit I was very curious to see how this would have been handled. It would have been interesting, albeit infuriating.

The rule was just too inconsistent.

Opposing unvaccinated players were allowed to play. Unvaccinated fans were allowed into the arena. And Kyrie himself was allowed to sit on the bench, just not able to participate.

Well, in fairness deGrom shouldn't have to tell you, or me, or the NY Post if he is vaccinated. He should only have to tell his employer's medical personnel, who should definitely NOT be telling anyone else his business. It would have been obvious to us who is/isnt on the field for home games.

do we travel to Toronto this year?

The thingalinga is that some athletes may well be fully vaccinated, but feel that revealing their status indirectly outs their unvaccinated teammates.

I wish I could say that this was a morally superior position to going unvaccinated, and it may feel as such, but it is only kinda.
