That endorsement for R.A. Dickey for the Mets Holla Fame in a thread below came as a surprise. With Edgardo Alfonso, Ron Darling, and Jon Matlack being inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame this summer, we see the team trying to make up for some lost time. Dickey is not unqualified certainly, but he wasn't on my frontlist.

So, the Mets call you and say that they will henceforth be inducting one figure per year, and you're on the committee. Each committee member gets to nominate one figure, and then you can all get together and fight it out. Who is your nominee, understanding that you cannot nominate current inductees and electees (I shouldn't have to say that, but I do), nor anyone nominated by another cat before you. We must have unique nominees, dig? The initial goal here is to pursue the curiousity of the distinct cases, rather than establishing overwhelming support for the leading case.

Current Inductees Include

Tommie Agee

Gary Carter

Frank Cashen

John Franco

Dwight Gooden

Jerry Grote

Bud Harrelson

Keith Hernandez

Davey Johnson

Gil Hodges

Cleon Jones

Ralph Kiner

Jerry Koosman

Ed Kranepool

Tug McGraw

Bob Murphy

Johnny Murphy

Lindsey Nelson

Joan Whitney Payson

Mike Piazza

Tom Seaver

William Shea

Rusty Staub

Casey Stengel

Darryl Strawberry

George Weiss

Mookie Wilson

Current Not-Yet-Inducted Electee Include

Edgardo Alfonzo

Ron Darling

Jon Matlack

Those were the first two I expected to come off the board. I suspect Wright's induction in 2023 or 2024 has already been a-scheduled.

I don't pay close attention; but kinda surprised that Fonz, Matlack and

Ronnie aren't already in. Edgardo was like Mr. Met for years.

I re-arranged Mets player HOF'ers in chronological order of their Mets debut. I find this arrangement more helpful. 1983 was the most bountiful season for Mets HOF'ers debuting (three).

I appreciate your style, but we ask that you whittle down to one and hope somebody grabs your other candidate.

BTW, I hope future (annual) inductions take the approach being taken with the upcoming class, with several generations represented at once to both make up for lost time and make it extra special for fans who can connect to different parts of their lives and the franchise's life.

“Pick one” is fine as a Metsullectual exercise, but “pick a bunch at a time” is how I hope the NYMHOF committee proceeds.

Understood. But how long should respectful restraint yield to respectful need to catch up, I wonder? Onsies can be so much more momentous.

I guess the answer should be "multiple guys at a time until they have one for every year since 1981." At that rate, Jon Matlack would bring us up to 2010, I think.

Another vote for El Sid

Well, I guess its less a call for a vote than a call for an adopted cause, uniquely your own, but Sid is available because Milkshake tried to horde a bunch of guys.

A worthy name.

Me too. And I'm not even on record here yet.

Lest it go unrecognized, non-playing candidacies are certainly encouraged.

The only “ONE AND ONLY ONE” I'd consider as “this guy should go in on his own because he's this guy” is Wright, and I'd pair the occasion with 5 rising to the rafters. The irony would be David is is as selfless a character as one could imagine and he'd happily share his day with any 5 Mets.

I don't think any of the others mentioned in this thread wore a Mets uniform (player or coach) for more years than "Little" Al Jackson.

He goes back to the very first year and was a player or mentor to countless Mets players for a half century.

He IS Mr. Met.

He deserves to be honored for his contributions to the team, both on and off the field.

By contrast, I don't think there are 9 names in total that I would put in. Even including Reyes and Beltran (who have some issues with their candidacies). I'm not a fan of marginal candidates being inducted.

Maybe I could get to 9 if I included Gary and Howie.

My nine are five players, two managers, one broadcaster, and one coach.

(And the players include Orosco, as mentioned above, and Reyes and Beltran, who I agree are problematic. I would nominate them, but not sure I would induct them.)

He's getting the HOF Achievement Award this year. Bob Mandt, Harold Minor and Pete Flynn were past recipients.
