Who is this person - what is his affiliation with MLB?

OE: Never mind - he writes for the Atlantic.

But I haven't seen this anywhere else.

Wow! Didn't think this would happen. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Repubs are going to run out of sports they don't hate soon.

The Athletic, not the Atlantic. The sports journalism website. And his link was pretty clearly the breaking news of MLB's statement. I doubt anyone else had seen it before the tweet. But it's also now up on the MLB website, if you are so inclined:

I impressed and surprised. Well done.

Perhaps it will go to LA as the Dodgers were supposed to host last year's game.

Well, the best way to make sure the salute to Aaron has some substance may be to move it to Milwaukee, where Aaron played 14 of his 23 seasons and was a key player in the hard fight for integrated housing in the city.

Not that there aren't voter suppression measures on the agenda in Wisconsin, but not having yet passed, maybe the game can be used as a carrot to dissuade such legislation.

It'd be interesting if Tim Anderson or David Price or somebody simply said, "You can have the game wherever you want, but I can guarantee you that nobody black is going to go if it's in Atlanta. Probably nobody brown either. And if any white guys show up to play, they're going to feel really stupid."

Fuck Wisconsin and their scumbag state legislature. They do everything bad in that state. US Supreme Court sanctioned voter suppression. Extreme gerrymandering. Lame-duck kneecapping of the incoming Dem Governor. Screwing voters during the most dangerous months of the covid pandemic. Scott Walker for two terms.

And MLB did its part but that's not nearly enough. Nothing is enough until Georgia repeals its new voter laws. Coke and Home Depot and Delta should be boycotted massively until Georgia's vile new law(s) is/are totally repealed. Those giant Georgia-based companies are playing politics, threading the needle, trying to satisfy everybody. After it's too late do they finally make public statements condemning the laws. There are even reports that Delta worked with the Georgia legislature in passing those bills.

There's real people in Georgia, too. Tony Evers is the only thing or person standing in the way of Wisconsin following Georgia's lead. If not for Evers ....

Whatch'a doin' this Summer? The 2021 ASG moves to Baltimore. Where it belongs: in a blue state.

The best part about this is that he doesn't even pretend to be doing his own work.

They'll have to be sure it's in a safely-blue state. Laws similar to Georgia's are percolating all over.

Boston, New York, Chicago, California, Seattle, Baltimore, Minneapolis and Denver are about it. Pennsylvania has a Republican legislature so that rules Philly and Pittsburgh out. Minneapolis if you really want to make a statement about George Floyd but I don't think Manfred is that adventurous. New York would be too obvious a 'liberal elitist cancel culture' play.

Dodger Stadium is having it next year so that probably rules them out.

I'd guess Baltimore, San Diego, or Denver. But of course I didn't think they'd actually pull the game in the first place.

When I read this nugget - GQP lawmakers, including Senators Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Lee (Utah) have called for an end to Major League Baseball's antitrust exemption after the league announced it would pull the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta - I wonder how fast those 30 MLB team owners contacted GQP "lawmakers" to remind them of how much money the owners have donated to the GQP over the years. Love of the game, my wrinkled backside.

I'd vote to see the ASG played in cruddy RingCentral Coliseum, due for demolition when if/when the A's finally get a new facility. Or Seattle, in a decent stadium and as far from Georgia as it gets.

Current reports suggest a big influence on this was https://theplayersalliance.com/The Players Alliance, a group of current and former players — most, but not all African-America — organized to advance justice and equity in baseball and society.

Alliance President Curtis Granderson spoke with Commissioner Manfred on behalf of the organization. Most reports suggest a meaningfully sized players' revolt was imminent, including managers and coaches, such as Dave Roberts, managing the defending champs, and scheduled to be the home manager in the game.

Why would any team want this All-Star Game, having been pulled from another team with few of the benefits that go with hosting a game? It might have been a better solution to have the Braves keep the game, but allow or even encourage, the players to wear some kind of personal statement on their jerseys.

Why would another team want to host a future game, knowing it takes at least a year of preparation and could be pulled away at nearly the last minute for reasons that have nothing to do with the team?

Posted

Well, a lot of the preparation is the responsibility of the city and state.

Beyond that, I wouldn't be so quick to absolve Liberty Media.

Right. Maybe if you want to host that big fancy All Star game, don't pass laws discriminating against half of your state's population.
