Giants designated Joe Panik for assignment.

Plays the infield

Veteran Leadership ™

From the NYC area originally

Cheap

Bats L

checks all the boxes for the Mets right now, if you can ignore the fact he hasn't been very good for the last 2 years

Yeah, I was just commenting on him in my Soft Cell-themed thread. He's also got some good glovin', last I checked. I don't know if that's still true.

You have to be convinced that he'll give you more than Dilson Herrera, Ruben Tejada, or Danny Espinosa. I'm not sure that's true.

Panik is a St. John's product. Was he, by any chance, a participant in the debut game at Citi Field?

batting 6th playing SS, wearing number 2. (which means we hate him)

I haven't been very fond of St John's University hitters since Larry Bearnarth hit a home run off me ( it may still be in orbit around Mars) in a college game. (Yes, he was a pitcher for the Mets, and later a pitching coach in the majors. But the Red Sox wanted to sign him as an outfielder. I saw why.)

He's better offensively _now_ than Luis Guillermo, but I'm not sure that'd be the case given equal opportunity. Panik is NOT good.

and hack may have been the wrong word there. Joel Sherman is a hack and the Post is drivel, but I do actually believe Sherman has the phone number of people that at least kinda know things. That blog on the other hand, is pure nonsense.

This is fine. I believe the cacophony of rumors ,but these aren't really 'sources'. The Mets secretly confirming that they're aware that Panik has been released, is from the area, and maybe could possibly in some scenario help them is not exactly breaking news.

Martino tweeting "I'll keep an eye on this!" like there's anything to pay attention to inbetween "Mets aware this guy exists" and "Hey, we've grabbed him." It's a nonsense of noise. And Martino and Sherman and all the others will retweet it, and then the Metsmerized aggregators will pick it up and repost it.

All for a guy who's bad and probably shouldn't get out of Syracuse.

It's one thing to be a skeptical consumer of information and another to be willfully and pridefully ignorant of what publications and journalists actually do.

Anyway, I like the idea of this move. Even if Panik, who used to kick ass, doesn;t have it anymore I'd bet on a dead-cat bounce. If he doesn't stick you can always go back to Guillorme/Hererra/Tejada/Espinosa

it's fine. But he's bad and they'd be better off with half a dozen other options they have, many of which are OFers and put McNeil at second.

But whatever. They can release him in a week when he stinks.

Panik's a little curious. His exit velocity is basically the same as it's been (86.4), just below league average. His launch angle increased by 3 full percent from last year to this, and his K% subsequently jumped from 7.7 to 9.8%. Maybe he just needs to calm his shit down and hang out with McNeil in the batting cage.

Hechavarria DFA'd to make room for Panik. Hoping he finds his way back to AAA.

well hell, if you're gonna add a bad player, release a badder one. Makes sense.

Apparently Adeiny was due a service time bonus if he stayed 1 day longer. Geez.

maybe 'launch angle' isnt such a good idea for guys who can't hit the ball over the outfielders' heads regularly? "improved launch angle" may help powerful guys homer but may cause a guy who was hitting line drives i front of people to now hit them at people? i wonder where his flyball/line drive/groundball rates have gone if he tinkered with the swing?

A million smackers! Imagine getting DFA'd the day before that triggers. Cancel the down-payment on the pool, Adeiny.

I have no idea if that has anything to do with anything, his launch angle was double-digits in the years prior. Just looking for reasons he might've fallen off the cliff.
