Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Giants designated Joe Panik for assignment.Plays the infieldVeteran Leadership From the NYC area originallyCheapBats Lchecks all the boxes for the Mets right now, if you can ignore the fact he hasn't been very good for the last 2 years
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Yeah, I was just commenting on him in my Soft Cell-themed thread. He's also got some good glovin', last I checked. I don't know if that's still true. You have to be convinced that he'll give you more than Dilson Herrera, Ruben Tejada, or Danny Espinosa. I'm not sure that's true.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Wasn't he like one of the hardest guys to strike out in all of baseball?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Panik is a St. John's product. Was he, by any chance, a participant in the debut game at Citi Field?

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I haven't been very fond of St John's University hitters since Larry Bearnarth hit a home run off me ( it may still be in orbit around Mars) in a college game. (Yes, he was a pitcher for the Mets, and later a pitching coach in the majors. But the Red Sox wanted to sign him as an outfielder. I saw why.)Later
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Matt Kemp, Rys Hopkins, Joe Panik? pretty good for a college team
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Apparently there are reports Panik is coming to the Mets.https://metsmerizedonline.com/2019/08/sources-joe-panik-expected-to-sign-with-mets-wants-to-come-home.html/?fbclid=IwAR190wIp8ak13-IeFr8MBBjAeDQBELJFrfIC2p-6lxNprsKfLlCIM0J2gJQhttps://metsmerizedonline.com/2019/08/sources-joe-panik-expected-to-sign-with-mets-wants-to-come-home.html/?fbclid=IwAR190wIp8ak13-IeFr8MBBjAeDQBELJFrfIC2p-6lxNprsKfLlCIM0J2gJQ

Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 We might be better served by a list who isn't a hack than who is.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Well see once he clears waivers today.Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Panik is certainly better offensively than Luis Guillermo. So no real downside here. Maybe we catch lightning in a bottle....
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 He's better offensively _now_ than Luis Guillermo, but I'm not sure that'd be the case given equal opportunity. Panik is NOT good.and hack may have been the wrong word there. Joel Sherman is a hack and the Post is drivel, but I do actually believe Sherman has the phone number of people that at least kinda know things. That blog on the other hand, is pure nonsense.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 We do a lot of labeling here.NBC sports quoting Anthony DiComo of MLB.com: https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mlb-rumors-ex-giant-joe-panik-mets-have-mutual-interest-signinghttps://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mlb-rumors-ex-giant-joe-panik-mets-have-mutual-interest-signing
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 This is fine. I believe the cacophony of rumors ,but these aren't really 'sources'. The Mets secretly confirming that they're aware that Panik has been released, is from the area, and maybe could possibly in some scenario help them is not exactly breaking news. Martino tweeting "I'll keep an eye on this!" like there's anything to pay attention to inbetween "Mets aware this guy exists" and "Hey, we've grabbed him." It's a nonsense of noise. And Martino and Sherman and all the others will retweet it, and then the Metsmerized aggregators will pick it up and repost it. All for a guy who's bad and probably shouldn't get out of Syracuse.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 I'm eh on this move. Not a lot of upside. I'd rather see Dilson.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Author Posted August 9, 2019 It's one thing to be a skeptical consumer of information and another to be willfully and pridefully ignorant of what publications and journalists actually do.Anyway, I like the idea of this move. Even if Panik, who used to kick ass, doesn;t have it anymore I'd bet on a dead-cat bounce. If he doesn't stick you can always go back to Guillorme/Hererra/Tejada/Espinosa
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Seems to be a done deal. Prepare to Panik.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 it's fine. But he's bad and they'd be better off with half a dozen other options they have, many of which are OFers and put McNeil at second. But whatever. They can release him in a week when he stinks.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Panik's a little curious. His exit velocity is basically the same as it's been (86.4), just below league average. His launch angle increased by 3 full percent from last year to this, and his K% subsequently jumped from 7.7 to 9.8%. Maybe he just needs to calm his shit down and hang out with McNeil in the batting cage.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Hechavarria DFA'd to make room for Panik. Hoping he finds his way back to AAA.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 We all know who the opposite of Joe Panik is, right?http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/JoePanik.png>
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Apparently Adeiny was due a service time bonus if he stayed 1 day longer. Geez.

"improved launch angle" may help powerful guys homer but may cause a guy who was hitting line drives i front of people to now hit them at people? i wonder where his flyball/line drive/groundball rates have gone if he tinkered with the swing?
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Apparently Adeiny was due a service time bonus if he stayed 1 day longer. Geez.A million smackers! Imagine getting DFA'd the day before that triggers. Cancel the down-payment on the pool, Adeiny.

Just looking for reasons he might've fallen off the cliff.
