Another deal without the slightest hint of a rumor preceding it. Well there's the backup shortstop anyway. Frazier dump coming? Hopefully not McNeil, whom this dude would seemingly replace.

From Eno Sarris in The Athletic, August 23, 2018

When you see something team-wide like this, you immediately think of leadership. And leaders, especially in this case, usually come from veteran position players. Talk to people around the team and two names keep coming up: Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis.

...

“I love talking hitting, and any time it comes up, we just talk; but I also recognize that I'm not the hitting coach,” Lowrie said. “I'm an open book, and if you come to me with anything you have, I can share my experience and my opinions and what I see, but I'm not going to you as a player and try to change what you're doing.”

Lowrie is always there to break hitting down with his teammates. Bush has the tools to help them prepare. Davis may not talk a ton, but when he does, the words are meaningful to his teammates and sum up their approach well. All three are leaders in their own way, even if none of the three is necessarily outspoken.

Glad we traded for JD Davis, guys. Seems more shit's gotta be on the horizon unless "Frazier/Cano at first until we're absolutely certain the Super Two deadline has passed" is a new goal. That or Brodie Van Heusen really really hates Jeff McNeil.

A good sign.

For a team reportedly out of money, this makes little sense to me

at 2 years/$10 million per....

I don't understand this move.

We now have six infielders that can potentially start (Cano, McNeil, Frazier, Lowrie, Rosario and Alonso). We have a 7th guy in JD Davis that could potentially be pretty good.

We have two starting quality outfielders, and two shitty ones, and no one behind them.

We also have Vargas as a fifth starter and no quality lefty relievers. We have no established cleanup hitter.

I'm guessing there must be a trade of some sort coming up.

He's a good player and having more good players is a good thing. It lessens the chance of seeing Reinheimer or Campbell.

Got no problem with the player or the price, but unless one of our infielders is an outfielder in disguise, or a trade or two is in the works, the money could have filled much bigger needs.

I still think the Yankees might take Frazier for Sonny Gray. What I wouldn't do is give up a cost-controlled position player with five or six years of control for bullpen help.

Are we setting up to trade Rosario for Realmuto? Does Miami have an outfielder they might package with him...?

So instead of having 6 1/2 starting infielders, they'll have 2 1/2 starting catchers?

You need to spend a LOT more time in the roster thread. Like, a LOT.

Lowrie can probably backup, but I gather that he isn't really a shortstop in the everyday sense anymore. So whatever redundancies there are, Rosario probably isn't among them.

Maybe they'll get all Randolphy and stack the team with extra infielders, using them as their backup outfielders as well.

I like the move and we'll see where it all goes, but I'm fine with acquiring a player at a good price and figuring out the redundancies later.

Is there a salary dump OF candidate that we could trade Frazier for, as our salary dump IF candidate? That would make sense, at least in the "let's trade garbge" sense.

Having slept (some) on it... if Lowrie stays healthy, this is actually a GREAT deal. Since 2017, he's made Murphy-ish late-career loft/hard-contact rate strides. He's insurance at both corners (in case Alonso is ready, e.g.) AND Rosario caddy in addition to another 2B body. If Frazier moves, cool. If not... will we complain if 6 mostly-vet guys get 400-plus PAs a piece? (Or 500 x 5, and 300 for whomever at 1B?)

The Royals have 2 years remaining with Jorge Soler for a total of $9.3 million and no established 3B. No idea if he is recovered from injury or if they really could use Frazier. Soler generally bad with the glove but a decent right-handed bat. File this in the WATP category.

Lowrie is a good player, super on-basey, and seems to fit this (or probably any team) pretty well as he can start/cover all over the infield.

It's a little odd as our infield is pretty full, but it seemingly only pushes Dom Smith or TJ Rivera to irrelevance and McNeil to more sporadic PT in the outfield. Cynically, it does make me wonder if it's also insurance in case Alonso isn't ready or they want to manipulate his service time a little and keep him in AAA "for seasoning". I think they'd be happy to start the season with Cano getting most of the time at first, Lowrie at second, and Frazier at third with McNeil plugging in where ever needed.
