I'd go higher. [*]deGrom: Five years, $110 million [*]Syndergaard: Five years, $110 million [*]Wheeler: Four years, $60 million Or go longer and give them the mid-contract opt-out that has been so popular the last few offseasons.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Newsday says this could be official within a few days: The Mets could announce as early as Monday that they are leaving WOR (710 AM) after five seasons and moving their radio home to WCBS (880 AM) starting in 2019, a move that has been expected since early summer. Ooh. I think 880 is clear channel -- we might be able to get that up here at night.

His agent could be telling him to pitch a full season like this before signing anything, and you couldn't really blame him. But I'd be talking to them regularly. I think they need to get all three of the big guns extended STAT. Pay them what they're worth and plant some security in the rotation.
So we started the season 11-1, and in the two months after the all-star break, Wheeler and deGrom are the only pitchers in the NL with sub-2.00 ERAs. We must be leading the division by like 30 games.
Benjamin Grimm wrote: Are they actually waiting for the last day of the season? What if it rains? The next-to-last day, actually. Hopefully he gets a little more than that, but we'll see.
bmfc1 wrote: They aren't saying "retirement" they said "medically unable to play". This must mean something with the insurance money paying some of the remainder of his contract. And aren't the Wilpons finances really the biggest issue? I'd bet. They probably have to be careful about the wording. But he made it pretty clear that he's done.
Ceetar wrote: yes, obviously, you haven't introduced any of the downside yet. Where's the part where they demand you trade your nearly as valuable infielder in order to afford that stud outfielder? I don't think anyone's saying that more money is *everything.* But having a larger budget is unquestionably a benefit. I can't see how it makes any sense to say different.
There's an interesting piece in that old thread, about Jay being excellent at *media relations* but not necessarily other stuff. I worked with a media relations person who was a nightmare to everyone, but did a great job at getting the right press coverage. So maybe that's a thing.

I agree. He'll be 24 this winter. We're worried about what's going to happen when he's 30?
