  1. Mike Ryan with a two-out RBI double in the ninth off Damaso Marte (was Hermanson not available?) and the White Sox and Twins will play extra innings.
  2. Hector Carrasco, drafted by the Mets in 1988, still helping us 17 years later.
  3. As much as they might not want the clock to start ticking on Milledge's major-league service time, I wonder if they'll bring him up in September, let him see what he can do.
  4. I've read this story a half-dozen times, trying to figure out why the kid got suspended and Penny just got a laugh instead of the other way around. Penny's a freaking moron.
  5. Counsell. I'll never forget that freaking home run. This is a rough transcript of the conversation between me and my TV that day:Me: Mando, just throw fastballs... no way this guy gets around on a 98 mph heater with that freaking stance.Mando: /throws fastballCounsell: /hits fastball way over outfield fenceMe: Shit.
  6. The Mets know that scalping exists, and they know that StubHub advertises on their broadcasts... who's to blame them from trying to get their piece of the pie? ("Legal" or not.)
  7. Hey, nobody around here is pro-Cairo... we're all anti-Cairo.
  8. I know... it made me sick that they would pander to the white fans like that.
  9. You need to get over this Ray Durham obsession. The guy's going to be 34 years old in December, can't run any more, hasn't played a full season since 2001 with the White Sox, and makes over $7 million. No thanks.
  10. What better way to spend your Wednesday afternoon than watching puppets try to save the world?I'm watching this now, and I'm already laughing so hard I'm crying. Full review when it's over.
  11. I loved reading Ron Luciano's books when I was a kid; he had so many great Earl Weaver stories.
  12. How about Tommy Lasorda's rant about Dave Kingman?Paul Olden: Can you give us just a few basic comments about your feelings on the game? Lasorda: Well, naturally I feel bad about losing a ball game like that, there's no way you should lose that ball game. An', it, uh, just doesn't make sense. Olden: What's your opinion of Kingman's performance? Lasorda: What's my opinion of Kingman's performance!? What the BLEEP do you think is my opinion of it? I think it was BLEEPING BLEEP. Put that in, I don't BLEEP. Opinion of his performance!!? BLEEP, he beat us with three BLEEPING home runs! What the BLEEP do you mean, "What is my opinion of his performance?" How could you ask me a question like that, "What is my opinion of his performance?" BLEEP, he hit three home runs! BLEEP. I'm BLEEPING pissed off to lose that BLEEPING game. And you ask me my opinion of his performance! BLEEP. That's a tough question to ask me, isn't it? "What is my opinion of his performance?" Olden: Yes, it is. I asked it, and you gave me an answer... Lasorda: Well, I didn't give you a good answer because I'm mad, but I mean... Olden: Well, is wasn't a good question... Lasorda: That's a tough question to ask me right now, "What is my opinion of his performance." I mean, you want me to tell you what my opinion of his performance is... Olden: You just did... Lasorda: That's right. BLEEP. Guy hits three home runs against us. BLEEP.
  13. As long as swear words are used properly, then it's educational!
  14. I love how Scarlet drops an F-bomb right after her son posts. Classic. If I didn't hate Roger Clemens with the passion of a thousand fires, I'd feel bad for the guy that he has an ERA of 1.58 but only eleven wins. But since I'm not much of a Clemens fan, I kinda enjoy that.
  15. metsmarathon wrote:why does the middle piece of hail look like a hairless crystal troll? or is it just me...No, marathon, that's you who looks like a hairless crystal troll.(Just kidding. You left a hanger over the plate, so I had to swing.)
  16. HAIL! Seeya, Danny Graves. Thanks for nada.
  17. A combined ERA of 6.00 from your top two guys (Looper & Bert) and four total blown saves? Heilman notwithstanding, they're at 4.62 for the month... I'd say that's actually pretty ugly.
  18. He made a couple of nice plays; one on a great dive down the line by Wright early, then a nice grab on the big DP later.
  19. Yeah, I'll admit I thought it made him a question mark, although I wasn't a CPFer at the time. I saw visions of late-career Larry Bird lying on the floor near the bench.
  20. Bret Sabermetric wrote:I'm arguing that the roster was partly composed to appeal to a particular demographic, which is the part that I find disgusting, and that has blown up in the Mets' faces.I apologize for blasting off; it was too early in the morning. I enjoy your posts, Bret; I really do. Just sometimes -- aaaaaaaaaargh!I would not say it's "blown up in their faces." This team is in the hunt for a wild-card spot, coming off a season in which they lost 91 games and finished 21 games out of the playoffs. I'd say that's pretty good. Could they be better? Certainly. But it's hard to go from 91 losses to 91 wins. They're at least going in the right direction now, I think.
  21. Bret Sabermetric wrote:Instead, they went for demographics--"Hmmm, we could draw more Japanese fans if we signed a great Japanese player--let's sign this bozo for a zillion bucks and hype him to death and hope we get real lucky" isn't a policy I approve of. Likewise the other Kaz, whom I suspect was another attempt to appeal to demographics rather than f'in baseball. Also the whole Latin marketing, which has worked out better on the field but which I still find disgusting. This is blatantly racist and offensive.First -- I'm not going to deny that Kaz Matsui was signed to sell tickets and jerseys. But whatever his shortcomings here as a Met, he had a career .309/.349/.486 line in Japan, which is pretty damn good for a middle infielder. Did they screw up? Yes, they did. I'm not going to say it was a brilliant move, but he was not a "bozo for a zillion bucks" who they "hoped to get lucky" with.Second -- The "other Kaz" was acquired because this team wanted another left-handed arm in the rotation, and maybe because they wanted to get rid of a clubhouse malcontent who was part of a past regime. Did they ride him too long? Obviously, but NOT because of his race.Third -- Guess what? There are Latinos in the New York area! (Gasp!) If you don't market to everyone, you're a freaking moron. It just happened that all three of the big-dollar free agents this year were Latino... and guess what? Our GM is Latino also. If you have a problem with that, get counseling... don't bring that crap around here. There's nothing wrong with creative marketing and knowing your demographics.I hate to say this, Bret, because sometimes I agree with you, but screw off.(edited to complete my thought on Matsui)
  22. Glavine 6Floyd 2Reyes 1Diaz 1
  23. Fran: "We use that word -- cahnfidence -- a lot during the baseball season. These kids in the major leagues? They've got talent. But it's the cahnfidence that you need."
  24. Mike Jacobs, your 2005 NL First Baseman Gold Glove winner.
