1. It's too bad that Feaver kid never panned out. He coulda been somebody.
2. He got dealt to Toronto! Funny.OOTP rules. I set up the 2005 Mets, added myself as a first baseman (I couldn't watch Mientkiewicz suck up the joint), and took them all the way. I set up a salary cap, but I had a hard time signing anyone during the offseason, because spending went out of control, and I couldn't get any of my big three targets in the offseason:Barry Zito, coming off a 14-13 season, signed a seven-year deal with LA at almost $31 million a year.Jason Marquis, 16-9 in '05, signed a 4-year deal with Texas at $23 million per year.Toby Hall, after displacing Mike Piazza halfway through the season (sorry Mike), signed a 3-year deal at $13.5 million per year with the White Sox.We're 16-10 so far in '06, thanks to a pitching staff anchored by... Kaz Ishii. 3-0 in '06, he went 16-3 in '05 with a 2.02 ERA.
3. Yay quiz! I have no idea on the non-Mets, but here are my six Mets guesses:Dwight GoodenRoger McDowellBarry LyonsRandy MyersDave MagadanRick Aguilera
4. Ooh, I loved [u:3c821c13f1]Wa[/u:3c821c13f1]. Great book. One of my favorite baseball books ever.
5. Hey, you can't spell Scheffing without "effing."
6. O's. Definitely O's.
7. According to Hardball Dollars, a pretty good source for all things contract-related:Mutual option for 2006; $3m buyout; guaranteed at $8mil with 164 IP; $11mil if 200 IPGlavine has pitched 143 innings already.
8. I'll go on record now as saying I don't want Ramon Hernandez at that much money for that many years. He's lost big parts of the last two seasons to injuries (knee in '04, wrist in '05), and he'll be coming off surgery this winter. If he wants a one-year Nomaresque make-good deal, I'd be cool with that.
9. August 14, 2005 -- Kazuhisa Ishii (0-1) took the loss for Norfolk, although he pitched exceptionally well. The only blemish on Ishii's line was a home run by Ray Sadler on the third pitch of the game. Ishii went 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and walking two. He also struck out nine. Bring him back! Seven-man rotation!
10. I read about that, but that audio is classic. Thanks for the link!
11. We're not asking someone else, JD. We're asking you. And you had better make a decision, because Trax is ready to pitch. Good thing you have an off day today.
12. I'll amp it up... I'd make this trade: tickets to a game at Shea where the Mets throw a no-hitter this season in exchange for a playoff berth. This team isn't making the playoffs anyway, and history like that would be very cool to witness.
13. Martinez 6Floyd 1Williams 1Wright 1Anderson 0.5Diaz 0.5
14. Ah, hell. Here comes Matsui.Isn't Glavine available?
15. Dammitdammitdammit. COME ON, GUYS.
16. When a no-no is on the line, you hit the wall. Hard. Gerald Williams, who had earned an MVP vote from me earlier, is now dead to me.But Marlon Anderson may just take Ice's vote.
17. Definitely a standing O for Pedro. Now we gotta win, bud.
18. Fran Healy never has any problems with tempting the Fates, does he?
19. Fran, pay attention to the words that are coming out of your mouth. I quote, while narrating highlights from a game from 1993:"Eight years ago to the day was Pedro Martinez's last start here at Shea Stadium."
20. 2005 NL MVP Gerald Williams follows a Diaz double with a looooong double of his own, and it's 1-0 Mets.Pedro follows by popping into a bunt 'em out-pop 'em up-double 'em off double play.
21. Neither one gets a number retired. Maybe Carter, maybe less Mex, maybe even less Piazza. Franco is a maybe; they might do a big 31/45 ceremony some day and honor both of them and Tug.
22. Cooby is a bit of a psychic, methinks. She always seems to know too much.
23. I guess I'd vote that too. It's not like we're bringing back Bob Feller here; while everyone else seems to be pitching well, ride them. Maybe we can dump Graves on the MFYs.
