  2. You know, it's been in the back of my head since the ninth inning Sunday; we were SUPPOSED to win the first two. They were at our park. That's why I'm just moderately worried, deGrom or no deGrom.

Sat in the Mezzanine back rows where the overhang gave a "letterbox effect" to the sightlines. I remember the Mets hit 4 straight doubles to start the game, and everyone would jump up to cheer and then bend their necks down so they could see what was happening. Ah, the Mezz Cave. Worst seats in the whole building. I sat in 'em for a playoff game in '99 iirc. I was also at that multi-double game. I was at the multi-double game as well, in the last row of section 46 (44?) in the upper reserved. Literally the highest seats in the major leagues at the time.
  4. I've always assumed, from my limited knowledge of Spanish, that it's Hay-yoor-eese. (Rhymes with geese at the end.)
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: Yeah, Knight was a full three years older in '86 than Murph is now so they shouldn't be treated as equal situations I was just thinking about it from a "HOW COULD THEY LET THE WORLD SERIES MVP SIGN WITH THE YANKEES" kind of thing that we're going to see this winter. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is there any reason why players would prefer to get their money later rather than sooner? Inflation? I can't imagine that inflation has too big an effect on someone making that much money. If the price of a gallon of gas or a carton of milk turns out to be a bit higher in 2021, I don't think it has too big an effect on multimillionaires. I've always wondered about this too. When I sign guys to extensions in OOTP, I always frontload them so if things get dicey later, I'm protected, but they still get their money.
  6. Centerfield wrote: Hey, we let Knight go after '86. We can let Murphy walk too. You know, I can't get that comparison out of my head either. And that's a good thing.
  7. Frig. I voted too quickly before I realized you could pick more than one.
  8. I saw the Cubs on the final weekend in Milwaukee, and this is hardly a scouting report, but I honestly wasn't all that impressed. Kris Bryant struck out three times, all with runners on base, and Rizzo wasn't any better. Arrieta is scary, but the other starters aren't.
  9. If he gets hot, FORGET IT. We believe, friend. You've got this.
  10. Just stumbled across this. Apart from the Bizarro World reality of Chipper Jones defending the Mets and Edgardo Alfonzo seemingly trolling him for his trouble, how weird is it that after a career as elite baseball players, these dudes end up seemingly wanting to spend their time doing what the rest of us mortals do: being dicks on the internet? That's awesome. And yes, I'm all in on Chipper now too. Go figure.
  11. Centerfield wrote: Game day. I'm nervous as all fuck. Tons of thoughts going through my mind and as much as I try, I can't really make sense of anything. Greinke was the best pitcher in baseball this year. As you saw with Kershaw the other night, if he's on, the other team can be shit out of luck. We are going to fucking lose. But wait, we have our own ace going tonight. And though you give the edge to Greinke, deGrom can be followed by Syndegaard, Matz, Harvey and Familia. The Mets can work to remove Greinke from the game and attack the bullpen. There is no relief in sight for the Dodgers lineup. We are going to fucking win! But the Dodgers are tough at home. Gonzalez has been getting hot. Turner has been hot all series long. They are dangerous up and down their lineup. One mistake can be fatal with Greinke on the mound. We are going to fucking lose. But our lineup is better. And we have our A lineup out there for only the second time this series. Given the choice of facing a lefty ace, or a righty ace, I pick the righty every time. Plus our guys have had great at bats against his slider. We are going to fucking win. If they lose, I am going to be pissed off about the blown call in Game 2 all winter long. This can't happen. We was fucking robbed! That's nonsense. Even after the call, Reed had a chance to get out of the inning tied. And since then, the Mets have had 2 chances to close out that series. Blaming one play three games ago is excuse making at its best. Get over it. That's baseball. Wait what? Fuck that. We was fucking robbed! It's ok if we don't win it all this year. This is the first step. We have a great base. Aces up and down the staff. We have a great lineup with some good young hitters. If we lose Cespedes, Sandy will find a way to put another competitive team out there. This team is committed to winning. We are seeing the beginning of a glorious time in Mets history. It's all good. But man, if they can get past tonight, I like our chances against anyone, and that includes Toronto. The Mets haven't put this good a team together since 1988. And it took a perfect storm of moves down the stretch to make this happen. They won't be as good next year, even if they re-sign Cespedes. We likely lose Murphy, Colon. No way our bench is as deep. Our chance is now! OMG IF WE DON'T WIN TONIGHT WE ARE NEVER GOING TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN. I AM SO READY RIGHT NOW
  12. This thread started out so strong, then went way off kilter, and now we're back on focus. Well done, team.
  13. That flip was beyond epic. Loved it.

  17. Ceetar wrote: you hear comments about him talking to the players some (thought you also here him say he doesn't want to impose or disrespect the current coaches). I'm sure he enjoys dropping the occasional wisdom bomb about batting or fielding to a Mets player, but that's the extent of it. The best parts of the broadcasts, Ron too, are often the ones where they're coaching us. I swear they have a better grasp on what's going to unfold on the field than the players do sometimes. I think you're right on both parts. It seems like Ronnie is right on his little predictions 98% of the time. It's awesome. "He's going to want to use that backdoor slider here." /pitcher throws backdoor slider
  18. I think Ernie Johnson is starting to get tired of Cal's crap. He "joked" last night about Cal and Ronnie switching seats.
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Doodoo, we need you. This. And it's an entirely separate issue from this thread. But on this topic, just about any team in baseball would take the Braves' run, despite "only" one WS title.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Keith has made it quite clear over the years that he had no interest in investing the time or discipline it takes to be a major league coach or manager. "It would interfere with cocktail hour", he once said. He only reluctantly warmed up to the idea of broadcasting after some time spent away from the game. I think he enjoys it now that he's doing it but especially enjoys the fact that he's be able to keep it to a 100 or so days per year gig leaving the rest of the time for relaxing, enjoying cocktail hour, and trolling for wimmen. I think that's exactly it. He'd be both a wonderful (unsurpassed knowledge and insight) and awful (doesn't have time for this crap) coach.
  21. G-Fafif wrote: MLB will hear his appeal Monday. Big help. "See, the problem is, the MLB offices are in New York City, so we have to wait until the next time he's in New York City. And he doesn't have plans to come here until next week, when he has offseason tickets to see 'Book of Mormon.'"
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I haven't made my mind up on Matz quite yet. I don't doubt that the Mets can rustle up a little something against Kershaw but it's be crazy to think this will be the 14-hits-a-side slugfest we saw last night. So what I'm saying is, Matz needs to have a solid outing. Pretty good or above, minimum. And as long as he does that, I'm okay. Give me six strong innings, kid.
  23. Centerfield wrote: I know he's kind of locked into his position having defended himself against Ernie Johnson and Ron on Saturday, but he brought it up again. Despite the league having ruled it illegal. Despite anyone not affiliated with the Dodgers or Phillies calling it a cheap shot. I get that he's a proud man, and I'm sure he's aware that public opinion is not with him. But that still makes him a stupid douchebag. And he can eat my asshole. I was literally stunned when I realized it was Cal Ripken on the broadcast. He's a complete idiot up there.
  24. d'Kong76 wrote: John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: 3. Speaking of, what the hell was the 1st inning delay about? I briefly tuned in the radio to find out by at the time Howie didn;t seem to know. Dugout/replay phone malfunctions supposedly. I think Mattingly was just being a dick and wanted to delay Harvester getting started but we may never really know... That's what they finally said on the TV broadcast, and Ronnie apologized for calling out the umps for prematurely issuing warnings. Howie was nearly apoplectic on the radio at the time.
  25. Fman99 wrote: I think, honestly, that the suspension is a cover up to keep him off of the field and out of the stadium in NY. Which means I also believe the 2 games will hold up on appeal. This. I honestly think they tell him to fly back to LA and wait for a potential Game 5. I have little issue with the broken leg -- injuries happen. But the fact that they came back and didn't call it interference is bullshit.
