  2. the 87 twins would have to be the worst world series winner, at leat based on my estimation. they are the only WS champ with a sub-.500 pythagorean record, and they are the only WS champ ever with below league-average offense AND defense (they were 8th of 14 teams in runs scored, and 10th of 14 teams in ERA) now, the cards might be the second-worst WS champion ever, but i think that the 85 royals might have a thing to say about that...
  3. how do you possibly leave out the arod slap?
  4. first saturday after thanksgiving, 1999
  5. howsabout we stick him in the pen...
  6. i always forget when discussing player grades... are we talking about grades versus expectations, or are they measured against the same standard?
  7. bask in the warming glow of the reflected glory.
  8. the jose ole thing.
  9. waaaaah! the big bad braden looper made fun of our song waaaaaaah!!!! fucking pussies. i bet every last one of those met fans who clicked on braden looper also were in the stands for benitez meltdown numero uno, 2001, chanting "ohhh oh o-o-ohhhh o-o-ohhh ohhh o-o-ohhhhh" thinking yall were so cool when the damned game wasn't even won yet, poking the pointy stick at karma like y'all shoulda known better, and then all sitting there agog that the fat lady didnt get up and sing in time, while john franco loses the game in bonus time. it was cool to make fun of the other team tehn, huh? but now they're all like "waaaaaah!!!! that other team made fun of us. that's just hurtful! waaaah!!!!!" met fans make me sick. ... sorry. i'd've typed out a big fat "SO?" over the whole looper song thingy earlier, but hadn't sensed the need. if looper = rocker over that, what does that say of a whole stadium full of chant-mockers? does it matter that its a player this time? yes. it actually makes it better, cos now he gets to stick it to everybody who booed his ass off while he pitched hurt for a whole season and kept his mouth shut. oh, and i'm grouchy today.
  10. what a whiny bitch. and dumb too. sheff can get a lot more money by taking hte 13M this year, and trying to get the two more years afterwards, than he likely could just by being a free agent this year.
  11. i've really gotta start photoediting some kenyans into my race pics...
  12. that #1146 guy sure was fast...
  13. um, this'll wreak havoc on anybody still using dial-up... http://klessuk.edublogs.org/files/2006/02/Picture%20190.jpg
  14. over the long term, there's minimal net loss to the owner, true. but in the short term, he loses a year of development of a top prospect. to a GM, trying to build a team, or trying down the road to trade a prospect or two for a star, that's pretty big. in the old system, he also lost the quality of that top prospect in addition to the year, which i guess was too much. if i own the worst team in the league, i get screwed by the old system if a player decides "hell with that, i ain't playing for no damned tampa bay devil rays" i lose that top pick, and in his place, i would only get the 31st best available player, the next year, right? that's a heck of a hit, imo.
  15. well, by selecting a player and not signing him so as to horde the pick, you would be keeping the player away from other teams. and the one-year carry over really strikes a nail in the coffin of my grand scheme. rats.
  16. but the merchandise sales would go to the team... as well as any royalties for using team imagery in marketing with the player.
  17. Nymr83 wrote: now THIS is a bad idea: (fromthat same BA article) ]Teams that fail to sign a first-round pick no longer receive an extra pick after the first round as compensation, but instead a virtually identical pick the following year; for example, a team that fails to sign the No. 5 pick one year will receive the No. 6 pick the next, rather than one in the 30s or 40s. The same compensation also now exists for unsigned second-round picks, while a team that fails to sign a third-round pick will receive a sandwich pick between the third and fourth rounds. see, i like that one. i see that as giving teams more leverage to sign players in a given draft. of course, a way to game it would be that some team could conceivably keep on taking away perfectly good high draft picks from other teams, consistently fail to sign said player, and keep on getting multiple picks in the top of the draft. and then, after so many iterations, could totally clean house in a given draft by selecting 6 guys in the first round. of course, their upper levels of the farm system would be barren, but then they'd have a tremendous influx of top talent a few years later. i don't think there's a team out there that thinks long term enough to make that scenario work, but it could happen. and that this new CBA allows for such a possibility makes it so much cooler. i really don't think that's a realistic concern, mind you, and the possibility and subsequent calamity, of that happening really in no way overrides the added leverage teams would now have in being able to sign top draft picks.
  18. right. 2007 2008 2009 2010 total value Matsuzaka 21 11 11 11 54 Zito 13.5 13.5 13.5 13.5 54 see, if they are paid the same over the length of the contract, and using your contract and posting fee assumptions, then in the last three years, we can better afford the risk of matsuzaka than of zito.
  19. of course, that scenario leaves you with two-three extra million dollars in the subsequent years of the deal with which to sign additional players. the risk is greater only for the first year than the subsequent ones.
  20. so then, is it fair to say that your opinion on japanese players is "temper your expectations" as opposed to "avoid at all costs"?
  21. i'm kinda curious, since they mentioned it last night that the last 1-5-6/4 double play in the world series was back in the 20's or so, how many real opportunities have there been for such a play? i mean, how many times have there been runners on first and second with no outs? how many times has the ball been hit sharply back to the pitcher, and fielded cleanly? how many times has he thrown to third, instead of to second? how frequently do each of those throws go astray? how frequently does the double play get turned successfully with the throw to third as compared to the throw to second? and does it matter that with slow runners at first and at bat, there's an improved chance of getting the ball to the necessary bags in time for additional outs? just because its rare doesn't make it difficult, tim. it just makes it uncommon. and if zumaya makes a better throw there, we're talking, perhaps, about how uncommonly brilliant that play was, instead of how bad it was. ("Montezuma" is what my firefox spellchecker suggests for zumaya. interesting!)
  22. nomo was pretty good there for a while.
  23. does that mean that there's no longer any restriction on talking to players turned free agents, or that there's no longer any way to bring back a player turned free agent for the following season? i'm sure it can;t be the latter, but for the former, what then is the point of offering arbitration? or did that somehow go away as well? actually, wait.. did they abolish the whole draft compensation thing? if so, what does that do to the free agent arbitration thing? clearly, there's just not enough meat in that clipping, and i'm way too easily confused.
